sturclub: practice makes deaf.

from the linernotes accompanying robots and electronic brains # 15:

although sturclub is not a band, but the club of the stubborn pig heads, the nucleus of the members is deepley rooted in a life-long tradition of swimming anti-stream. the oldest of the angry old men started trying to crossbreed guru guru with hank williams in 1970, the youngest went nuts and speaks in tongues since his attempts of an amalgamation of screwdriver and throbbing gristle in the mid-80s. he thinks he is french. in between, we have a schizoid reincarnation of hasil adkins, lucretia borgia, john cage, sid vicious and buddha (with a bit of khomeini and bugs bunny thrown in for good measure), and then there is a funny guy in black underwear who smokes bicycles. he thinks he is saint stephen and always gets thrown of by the guitar he rides (mid tempo, though). the whole mess started 22 years ago with the pinkees, but - to cut an endless story short - after projects like tôle ache, autofick, prae-kraut pandaemonium, m.p..3..., autoklick, schrecklein and even producing kim fowley and stuttgart fluxus legend albrecht/d. four survivors of countless, often interactive actions, decided to get rid of all those music lovers, who only are in the way when it comes to the real nitty gritty sound of the unexpected and unpredictable.

in 2003 werner voran, david dufour, ralf siemers and uwe büchele (in order of appearance in the paragraph above) founded the sturclub and started kicking their heads out and in about the definition of the term "improvisation" (i.e. is it allowed to improvise about a theme, is it forbidden to play the instrument you more or less are able to master half-decently, is it allowed to forbid or is it forbidden to allow??? - usual answer: yes, of course, but there are exceptions). and they still do. initially thought as a private institution, a weekly congregation with selected guests, the club stumbled into the trap of stardom, when unforseen demand for their quirky approach to producing soundscapes (this is not a music band!) forced them to play on the radio (and get away with it), and help to safe boring art exhibitions. ever since they turned down offers to gig at standard rock venues, as well as to play for narrow-minded elitist audiences with a stockhausen-complex, cause both of these seem to believe that it is necessary to limit the kind of music they want to hear and pay for. the sturclub nowadays rather plays unannounced and open air on a bridge over the river neckar, or unplugged with children of the local kindergarten.

four tracks are included on the robots # 15 cd: a short spoken word intro and three defolded collassemblages entitled 4:31, 4:32 and 4:34. the title of each track states the length of each track. the fifth track - a version of 4:33 of course - will only be audible when you press the pause/hold button of your cd-player for four minutes and thirtythree seconds. more obscure information can be found on wiki.sturclub.de, and please visit www.sturclub.de, if you can find the time.
