waited about a month for an ouright "deflect" letter from editor(not sent for review). But it did contain a little bit of helpful feedback for future revisions.
*
submitted something 4 months ago and counting...
*
Submitted in August, got rejection in January. Two reviews were fairly positive, one was rather nasty.
Got the sense from the nasty reviewer that he/she was miffed I didn't cite his/her work.

SSSP has Annual Reports on their website (as does ASA for the ASA journals). The
2006-2007 report is at:
http://www.sssp1.org/File/2007CommitteeReports/2007EditorsAnnualReport.pdf.The upshot is that about 20% of initial submissions were given either R&R's or conditional acceptance.
None were accepted outright. A little over 20% were "deflected" which I take to mean rejected by the editors prior to peer review.
Of the revised submissions, only about 18% were rejected, while about 52% were accepted. The remaining approximately 30% were given second R&R's or conditional acceptance.
*
received a conditional acceptance 6 weeks after submission...sent the minor revisions in about 3 weeks later and received a formal acceptance 2.5 weeks later...overall, a very quick and timely turnaround...great feedback and comments...
*
received a R&R after four months. All three reviews were pleasant, but only one was particularly useful. Revision accepted in less than a month.
*
Received an email a month later after submission asking for submission fee (I forgot). Sent the check immediately, waited another month, got a letter from editor rejecting the article prior to peer review. The editor did not offer any useful comments.
*
Sent paper in july. Still waiting in December....longest turnaround time Ive experienced thus far....
