4 months on a reject, but with 4 extremely thorough and helpful reviews.
6 months on first review, 6 months on R & R!
My experiences with reviews at AJS exhibit a lot of heterogeneity. I've had a paper returned with a decision in as short as two months, but I've also had to wait 6+ months. Incidentally, the number of months under review seems to bear no correlation with whether the paper was accepted or not.
I also had 6 months on first review, and then another 6 months to review the R&R.
6 months on first review, 4 months on R & R
8 months on first review
13 months and still waiting on first round of reviews.
7 months for first review. Received an R and R in which the reviews were positive and useful, but letter from editor included additional revisions that were more foundational and somewhat off the mark of the paper's intended contribution. Resent elsewhere.
4 months to get back reviews from 3 reviewers. All three sounded like R&Rs, but the paper was rejected. I think the editors (correctly) did not think the suggested revisions could be accomplished quickly. The suggested changes were somewhat unrealistic.
Over 3.5 years between submission and acceptance for a 15-page, double-spaced manuscript. 13 months between submission and R&R. About 6 months between resubmission and acceptance. 23 months between acceptance and publication. And all this despite repeated inquiries. The lesson I learned: never hesitate to check on the status of your manuscript, and never assume that anyone else is keeping track of your paper. They are not.
