Massachusetts College of Art - On campus interviews last week.
I heard the SC chair wanted to post for World History instead of
modern American history after years of complaining for a modernist to join the Department
because he's a difficult/controlling early.new Republic Americanist and feels like a globalization person isn't
threatening his territory. (His Ph.D. is in AmCiv not American history.)
Be extra wise: Get everything in writing from this search chair before verbally accepting any offer there.
I'm at Mass Art now as an adjunct. There are job talks this week and next.
There are about seven people total, I think, giving them.
I really like many of the profs there and that chair does have a rep for being difficult. This is my first year there.
I wish I'd talked to the chair of the department instead of the chair of the search only before joining the department
as an adjunct. During this semester, I've met some other faculty and they seem nice. I'll probably be there next year, too, unless
I land something permanent.
Hi to whoever wrote above. I'm a sociology PhD to be and I'd love to land a job at an art school like
Mass Art but I couldn't really figure out the job listing. I did apply. Do you know if any of the interviewees are sociologists?
Are they all historians? Just wondering - many thanks.
The job ad was somewhat murky, I think, partly because it said "world history/gloablization/migration, etc...." The committee seems to be willing to say that they
are looking for someone with a world history degree but the chair of the commitee insists on not saying world history.
Instead, he consistently stresses it is a globalization position. I don't know if everyone on the shortlist is an historian.
Also, there is pressure from above apparently to hire a person of color and almost half the short list is AA candidates.
And like many faculties they are looking for more diversity.
Finally, it is a terrific place to teach - if only my position were permanent. C'est la vie.
I hope this helped. Sorry I don't know more.
