Just curious about type of job (tier one, small college, private etc.) rough geography, and starting salary.

This is interesting, but let's also clarify if the position is starting assistant professor, advanced assistant, associate, etc because that makes a difference in the salary. Also, are we putting down the inital offered salary or the salary we were able to negotiate for?

It may also be useful to specify whether the candidate was ABD, post-doc, non-TT, or TT. And while we're at it, whether there were 1+ competing offers.

Note: This listing now includes both Literature and Rhet/Comp positions

Combining lit. and rhetcomp jobs really hoses the usefulness of this list, because lit jobs tend to pay less and it makes it difficult to get an accurate picture for the sake of bargaining. Could they perhaps use: english literature starting salaries
I agree, and I've removed the salary from my lit job and put it on the other page.

  • Q: Can someone clarify the distinction between R1 and R2 universities? I've been wondering about that for some time. Thanks!
  • A: I believe this is basically following the Carnegie Foundation Classifications: http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/classifications/
For instance, R1 is *roughly* equivalent to the RU/VH category (Research University, Very Active); R2 roughly = RU/H (Research University, High Activity).
Examples of R1: Harvard, Stanford, U. Chicago, UT Austin, etc., Examples of R2: Boston College, William & Mary, Rutgers, Miami U. in Ohio, et al.
