GENERAL DISCUSSION
Another Newbie1/20: I love this resource - thanks for making this! I have a few questions since I am new in the game. I am an ABD and am finishing next year. I notice you don't have a survey option for this. Does that imply that it's futile to apply if you're not finishing by the start date? Be honest. When I was in undergrad more than half of my professors were ABD somewhere and didn't even finish their degrees until after teaching for a few years. I'll be done next year. Also, when a job is listed under "Jobs Requesting Additional Materials" am I correct in thinking that if I applied for this job and haven't heard anything that I'm out of the running?
Finally, when do the first apps go up each year, June?
Solidarity!
1/21: Welcome to the job market! It is not unheard of for schools to hire ABD candidates; my school hired an ABD musicologist in 2009. This being said, you are entering the market at a pretty depressed time and you are competing with a lot of applicants who already have degrees in hand - some possibly already have tenure-track jobs. All things being equal, search committees typically prefer hires who are already credentialed. Naturally, all things are rarely equal, and I can imagine certain ABD candidates who would be ideal for particular jobs, and a lot also depends on the school to which you are applying. For example, I am guessing that your undergrad institution was not what might be described as a "high-powered research university," which would be far less likely to have a faculty made up of 50% ABD's than other kinds of schools.
What does it mean?
12/07: I am a newbie in job market and I have a question - Let's say you apply to a job where they ask you recordings, but then ask you additional material (specifically, hi-quality soundfiles) - how big is the pool of applicants at this stage? Also, does that mean that I made it through the first step? (meaning, my CV, my resume, my references were okay?)
12/08: Answer to the first question: about 6-10. Answer to the second question: yes. Congrats!
12/08: Thanks! Although I honestly doubt I will make it to the end. But you never know :) - can I ask you a last thing? Do you think it would be okay, in addition to the material they ask (2 recordings) to include also high-qual recordings of the previously submitted piece and an updated CV (I had some big news recently)?
12/09: If you're just going to submit new recordings of pieces for which they already have recordings, then don't bother; you run the risk of annoying the SC. On the other hand, if you've had big news, then you should let them know, but I might suggest doing it by an email to the chair, rather than sending an updated CV.
01/24: In my experience, the size of the pool after the first cut can vary widely from search to search. I'm on the search committee for one of the positions advertized above. We requested additional materials from 23 applicants (much more, in other words, than 6-10). Many years ago, I was on a search committee for a similar position at the same school that requested additional materials from only 8. Committees, needs, and applicant pools vary enough from position to position that it's difficult to generalize on this point.
01/25: new question and a sensitive one. I recently received an email from a dean asking me to apply to a position. Should I be cautious or excited? What are the chances of falling flat on one's face in such a situation?
01/26: To respond to 01/25, of course that's good news so you should be excited. Although the Dean will make the official hire and may recommend you to the SC, the SC may have their own handful of candidates that they wish to pursue. Consider it a foot-in-the-door, but not the end-all. It would be interesting to know if you end up getting that job, so please report back to us when that does/does not happen.
01/26A: Also responding to 01/25. I may have some information on this, although I have no affiliation with the school or the search. I, too, was recently contacted by a dean to apply for a position. This dean has been very proactive at looking for "elite" candidates to apply for this position at his/her school. In this case, the dean has reached out to a number of composer and performer contacts looking for recommendations. To my knowledge this person has (as of several days ago) a list of 18 or so prospects they have been contacting. This dean also acknowledged that there is a search committee, and while as the dean he/she has final say on any offer, he/she is not a part of that search committee and is only soliciting applications from those, who by reputation, may be a good fit for the job. I wish all deans took their jobs this seriously and really looked for the best people!
1/31: I agree with the others that it is a plus to be asked, but don't hire movers just yet. I got a call from a search committee chair this year asking me to apply for a job - first time it ever happened to me - so I said sure and sent in the materials. I figured I should at least expect a phone interview if not a fly-out. They never even called. When I later inquired as to why they bothered at all, the response was that they just invited more people than they could fly out. So I was good enough to invite to apply, but apparently not good enough to merit first-hand consideration.
Teaching Load
11/29: What should one expect the teaching load to be for these posted positions? Of those that give this information, they all are 2-3 courses per semester: Denver (2/2/2-quarter system), Chicago (2/2/2-quarter system), Santa Clara (3/2/2-quarter system with reduction for first year). I am also curious to know other people's teaching load. Mine is 4/4 and I am only given 1.5 credit hours for research/creative activity (which works out to be 7%)
12/2: I'm not on the market this year, but am currently in a TT position at a small- to medium-sized state school. My teaching load is 3/2, and was 2/2 in my first year. When I accepted the position, I had to weigh it against an offer from a larger school that was asking 4/3 (though the "4" was two sections of the same class) for slightly less money.
Position Descriptions
8/15: To avoid overloading this page with job descriptions, make the name of the school above link to the online posting.
8/22: What would everyone think of also posting the Music Technology/Recording Arts jobs on this Wiki as well?
8/24: Typically, these fall under Theory/Etc. I'm fine with a new subheader for jobs that are primarily tech/rec.
Search Committees and the Wiki
1/31: I'm curious about the presence of search committee members on this wiki. Do they frequent it as much as we applicants do, and if so, how do they react to our various postings? I'm especially curious about the etiquette involved in posting things like "more materials requested." Several times I have felt nervous about being the first to share this information on the wiki, because of some (perhaps unwarranted) paranoia over search committee members reacting poorly to disclosure of their timetable/#ofcandidates/whatever. Do some real job updates get neglected for this very reason? How much discretion do you use when posting info?
1/31(2) I am an applicant and I am sharing everything I know to be true on this wiki. Just post as much as you are comfortable. The creation of this wiki is for us applicants to know what's going on instead of being in the dark. I have been on the job market long enough to remember the dark ages when all we could do was wait.
1/31(3): I'm on an SC right now, and there are a few of us who regularly check this wiki for accuracy, but that's about it. As long as misinformation isn't being posted, we don't care (this was a problem a few years ago when we had another search, someone kept moving our job to the "accepted" section even though it hadn't been). Having said that, ours is one of the jobs that has not yet been moved up to the appropriate category. I think it's safe to say that we all feel it's up to the candidates to edit the wiki, and if they don't feel comfortable doing so, none of us is going to either.
2/1: I'm currently on an SC as well, and I *have* edited the wiki, since one of its primary functions is to disseminate information about the progress of the search, and who knows better than us? I think it's particularly useful for applicants who don't make the short list but haven't been ruled out, because they won't receive an official rejection until we have a contract signed. I wouldn't post a candidate's name, but I think updating the stage of the search is for the greater good, regardless of who does it. (Maybe the candidates on the previous poster's short list don't follow the wiki, or maybe they are too busy preparing for their interviews to post.) In answer to the original poster, a candidate's updating our search status would not affect our evaluation of that candidate. If anything, it should reflect positively, since it suggests at least a minimal degree of computer literacy and engagement with the job-seeking community, but it's nowhere near important enough to be a factor. Important factors for us are teaching and research abilities, musicianship, departmental fit in terms of research specialization, collegiality, and general knowledge of the discipline.
2/1(2): This is very good to know - I myself have been reluctant to make certain updates out of the (perhaps unrealistic, definitely paranoid) fear that the SC will somehow identify me and view it negatively. But let me make the question a bit more specific: are there any members of SCs out there who _would_ prefer that candidates refrain from updating the wiki? Assuming the information is accurate, of course.
2/1(3): This is 1/31(3) again, @2/1: Be funny if we were on the same SC.
State of the Market
11/16: Perhaps it's a bit premature, but how does this season's crop of positions seem to compare to past years, at least around this mid-November stage? Some people at SMT suggested that it was looking better than previous years; so should we be expecting an influx of more postings within the coming months? And are the jobs that have been posted moving at the normal speed? We seem to have a couple portion of searches that have already gone to stage two (additional materials requested), as does the Musicology Wiki. Forgive if this seems a naive set of questions, I'm a first-comer to the market and would appreciate the perspective others could offer.
11/16[A]: As someone who has followed this page for the last three or so years, I can tell you that it already is looking a little bit better than in the past. I have observed that things have been moving very slowly. The only reason I can think of, other than committees being unusually slow this year (I don't believe this), is that fewer people are actually following and updating the page. There does seem to be a lot less traffic and discussion than a year ago.
11/16[B]: It could be worse, but it does seem like it's almost all big public institutions that are hiring this year. There's a marked dearth of liberal arts schools. Also, lots of places in Texas, to which I don't apply on principle (you're welcome for bowing out of competition).
12/2: It's definitely no worse than it has been in the last three years. I'm not sure that the market is *much* better, but the difference seems to be that there were more jobs advertised in the early part of the fall semester than I remember in recent years.
Posting Jobs
12/17: Is there any particular reason we are posting jobs on the day of their deadline? It doesn't seem very proactive to introduce a job into our discussions after the deadline for that job has passed, or at least in the "jobs that have been announced with no updates" section. Just my opinion.
12/17[A]: I agree. This is the first I have seen of the Murray State job. At this point I can't find any trace on their website either.
12/18: Even if there are jobs with deadlines that have passed that are not included on the wiki, I think we should add them as they develop through the various stages: acknowledged to phone interview to onsite interview to offer made to offer accepted.
1/12: I agree with all of this, case in point: Miami University whose application deadline is already passed but has acknowledged apps. Also, It seems like the Comp and Theory/Comp jobs have been sitting pretty idle for awhile now (except UIUC). Is anyone privy to any information about these jobs? It would be nice to know.
1/13: I agree as well. The function of this page, first and foremost, is to inform us (the community of job-seekers) of openings. Yes, this page should not be a replacement for HigherEd/Chronicle/CMS, but it is still a resource that we should use fairly. I understand that life isn't fair, but posting a job after the deadline has passed is simply poor form, in my opinion.
1/16: 1/13 poster, you say that you agree, but then go on to express the opposite opinion of several of the posters above. I don't see any reason not to post all listings we become aware of, regardless of whether their deadlines have passed, to get a more accurate opinion of what the actual job market is in a given year.
1/17: I am the original poster. I did not intend for an argument to possibly happen. I agree with both 1/13 and 1/16: We should use the page to get an accurate image of the job market. While the page should not be used as the authoritative source of job openings, it would be nice if our introduction to a new job opening would come during a time when one could actually apply for said job. You're both right.
1/19: The musicology/ethnomusicology wiki is suffering from the same kind of misguided competitive behavior. It's natural for people to want to keep a job as secret as possible until they might benefit from sharing it. This wouldn't be a problem if there were enough jobs to go around.
1/20: I too have posted a job after its deadline, but I can assure you there was no "misguided competitive behavior" involved. I just didn't notice that it hadn't appeared on the wiki yet, so added it. I suggest that slandering those who post jobs will only limit the activity of the participants of this page. My impression is that the primary value of this wiki is its ability track the progress of existing jobs, a function that no other resource shares. There are plenty of places to find job postings. If people post jobs late, for whatever reason, it doesn't so much matter so long as they do get posted and updated.
Searching from a TT job
1/22: Any advice on searching for a new TT job, while currently in another TT job? I'm especially interested in anyone's thoughts and experiences on dealing with references and letters of recommendation. On one hand, it seems like my current colleagues would be well suited to be references for me - they have current knowledge of my teaching, my research, my service, etc. But on the other hand, I don't want my current colleagues to know that I'm shopping for a new job. What's the most polite way to say "please don't contact anyone at my current school without my knowledge"? I don't want to seem like I'm hiding anything from a potential employer, but at the same time I don't want my department chair to get an unexpected call from a search committee. Thanks for any advice.
1/22(2): It is common sense that contacting a candidate's current employer has a potentially damaging effect on his/her current job. I don't think it is unusual to not include your current supervisor or colleagues on your reference list. The reason is very obvious. I would think it is expected for the search committee to know NOT to contact your current TT institution.
1/23: Speaking as someone also TT and still open to applying places, you should expect that it will become common knowledge in the department. It's too hard to keep a secret (especially if you are suddenly "sick" on a few Fridays in March having never missed a day of class in your life!). For references, I suggest asking a friend on the faculty to be a reference - and leave it at that (not the chair for instance). I was surprised how well everyone took it when they found out I was applying (to leave a regional state institution), and was also surprised how many others were also on the market. But with the job market the way it was from 07-11, everyone knew it was a pipe dream. Having not found employment elsewhere I fully expect that they'll tenure me this semester, and that will be the end of it...
1/23(2) @ 1/23: The end of what? Your job search or your colleagues' interest in your job search? Do people typically give up their interest in relocating once they've achieved tenure? If so, why?
1/23 (again): The end of my search. I haven't managed to get a better job in all these years, despite some really big publications, so I don't see anyone offering me a R1 job after tenure. With past raises and a (presumed) promotion and with side income from gigs, etc, the sideways move won't work because I'll take a big pay hit.
1/23(3) @ 1/23: Everyone is entitled to a better job, even those with tenure. Maybe after you successfully get tenure, you can start looking for administrator jobs. Anyway, you are in a much better place than most of us on this wiki page.
1/23 (yet again): I admit to being luckier than most and to being in a better position, however I won't be moving to admin - I can't take that mess!
1/25: To answer 1/23(2), from what I understand, being recently tenured is about the worst position to be in when looking for a different job. Places looking for a junior hire will assume you don't want it, or they'll be more interested in the "potential" of a new PhD. The rare places looking for a senior hire are going to want a big name, which most newly-tenrued faculty aren't.
INSTITUTION-SPECIFIC DISCUSSION
Western Michigan University
1/31/12 Has anyone heard anything about the Western Michigan University position? I had a Skype interview back at the beginning of December, and haven't heard anything since then. I'm guessing they've already invited candidates for on-campus interviews?2/2/12 I had a Skype interview in December, too. Haven't heard a thing...
University of California, Santa Cruz
1/26/12 It seems unusual that they waited over two months before acknowledging applications. Any word as to what's going on with this search?Smith College
1/20/12 Anybody hear from Smith? Anybody else apply?1/21 I applied too...not a peep (x6)
1/21 I haven't heard anything yet but I have noticed hits from Smith College and the immediate area on my website. Specifically the pieces that I submitted with my application. It seems that they are checking people out unless it's a coincidence.
1/23: I've had hits on my site as well, the last one about 3 weeks ago, but other than that, nothing.
Binghamton University
12/6 The position is still listed on the Binghamton University website. After logging into the system for returning applicants, it says "Closed". I assume this means that they are not accepting additional applications and NOT that the position has been filled or the search has been canceled. Does that sound right? Has anyone heard anything in response to an application?12/17 I checked the FAQs, and it says that the job status "Shows you the status of the position i.e. Open, Closed." If they used i.e. correctly, then your assumption was correct. If they used "i.e." when they ought to have used "e.g." (one of my pet peeves), then it could be open, closed, under review, etc. Who knows? Perhaps ask the SC chair?
1/13 Any word about Skype interviews yet?
1/20 Postponed for next week, but have they been rescheduled?
Dartmouth College
11/7 Does anyone have a link to this job?Fairmont State University
2/1: I noticed someone noted receiving a rejection letter in December. Any other movement on this search?Full Sail "University"
10/19: IMHO, this job listing does not belong on the wiki, because Full Sail is an example of the for-profit education business rather than a university.10/19: See archived 10-11 wiki for an earlier version of this argument.
10/20: Oh, I remember that argument. It wasn't pretty, but it was rather entertaining.
10/22: agreed - deleted
University of Georgia
12/16: I sent my application 11/27 and have not received an acknowledgement of receipt. Just curious whether those who received acknowledgements got them via e-mail or snail mail?12/16(2): E-mail (received 11/28).
12/17: E-mail received 12/8
Manhattanville
1/30: Perhaps this is incredibly obtuse, but does anyone have any clarification on what exactly a committee is looking for when they ask for a "list of technical strengths," without any further specification?1/31: Why don't you ask the committee chair? It usually depends on the job. If it's a music technology job, it should include programming, software and hardware experiences. But for theory and composition jobs, it is unclear what they are looking for.
1/31(2): I could be totally wrong, but I interpreted the "CAI" in the job posting to mean "computer-assisted instruction". With this in mind, I think they are asking for a list of technical strengths in the classroom. Again, I could be completely wrong.
University of Pennsylvania
8/23: Maybe this listing should be under Theory, Etc. The description seems to fit a broader range of abilities/interests than an exclusively Music Theory position.8/25: In the past, jobs that have said things like "All areas of specialization will be considered," have been left in the Music Theory listings. Only positions that specifically say that they are *only* looking for specialties go into the Theory, Etc. category.
9/26: Just found out that one of my references was contacted for this. Does anyone know if references are automatically contacted by the system for this job, or does this represent having made it through a preliminary cut?
9/30: I'm guessing that it's an automatic request. If they've got the 30th listed as the first day that applications would be reviewed, I don't imagine the committee would have any meetings prior to that date. Just a guess, though.
10/12: I know two people (other than myself) who have had their references contacted for a letter. Doesn't sound like a cut.
10/18: It's an automatic request; their online system sends a request to the references you listed in your online application.
10/19: As this posting has now been moved to the requested additional materials category, can anyone specify what the request was for? I trust this request is separate from the automated request for reference letters by Penn's HR system.
10/21: In the email I received, from the Penn music dept. Chair Emma Dillon, the request was for:
1. Two article or chapter length essays, representative of your scholarly interests.
2. A syllabus with rationale for a topical graduate seminar, on any topic of your choosing.
3. A short statement (a page or two) on the problems and challenges you perceive in teaching music theory to undergraduates today, and your thoughts on potential solutions.
11/23: I'm beginning to agree with 8/23 about moving this to Theory, Etc. A theorist friend of mine just received an email rejection based on an earlier additional materials request on 10/18, and this website isn't showing much activity for this job from other theory candidates either. However, it is getting some activity on the musicology wiki, including campus interview requests; which might suggest that Penn's really looking for a musicologist who can also do theory.
11/23 (2): Second the above sentiment. From what I know of the candidates they did pursue additional materials from, they were not looking for special theoretical expertise whatsoever. I will ask this though; did email rejections go out to everyone who applied, or only those who made it to stage 2 but not stage 3. I got no rejection email, so am a little curious.
11/24: Maybe you need to rethink what theoretical expertise might be.
11/28: I rethought what "theoretical expertise" is and, as a result, have removed this job from this wiki. This job was always best suited for the musicology job wiki.
11/28: When 11/24 suggested that you rethink what theoretical expertise might be, I doubt that poster intended for you to decide to remove the job from this listing altogether! (11/28.1: Duh...) I think the point was for you to broaden your definition, not decide that you know the disciplinary boundaries better than the institution doing the hiring. Perhaps despite the arguments below (U. of OR) there is more to theory than SMT....
12/2: To answer 11/23 (2), I'm in the same boat as you. I applied but didn't get a request for additional materials, and got no rejection letter (or even any acknowledgment at all from the school). So I assume the rejection letter is just those who made it to stage 2 but not 3.
12/18: Is this in addition to Marcus Butler or is he not there anymore?
12/18: Mark Butler is not there anymore; he was poached by Northwestern.

1/25: With two positions open, are people sending two sets of applications? The three-year was due on January 15, the one-year on February 15. Any thoughts?1/26: Send two sets of applications. They are two different searches and should have different committees. To make things worse, they also have a 2-year position in TIMARA. All of them have the same mailing address. Don't get them mixed up.

8/13: Where is this posting? It's not on OSU's HR site, the School of Music site, HigherEd, Chronicle, or CMS. Perhaps when we list a posting, we should include the link?8/15: I received an e-mail from David Huron (via SMT-announce) on August 5th.
8/24: Added a link to the Chronicle posting
10/18: What are the "additional materials" that have been requested?
10/19: Writing samples were requested on 10/10.
Notre Dame
8/15: Does this job still exist? It seems to have vanished from the web already.8/25: yes; it vanished like an apparition of . . . well, notre dame.
9/6: The job very much still exists, and I've added a link to the ND music dept's online posting.
11/25: Curious: were people asked for additional materials with an email or a snail-mail request?
11/25 (2): Email in my case.

12/16: Poster above put SCU in "acknowledged applications"-was it by email? snail mail? I got nothing yet.12/16: Mine just came today through snail mail. They must be trickling out. (x3)

10/26: Email received stating that my application is being reviewed for further consideration. (x3)University of Oregon
10/2: The application procedure states that "three recent letters of recommendation must be sent by the writers directly to the search committee." Do people think that the search committee would have a problem with the letters being sent from Interfolio (a document management service) instead of directly from the writers themselves? It seems like an unnecessary hassle to my references to send letters directly to search committees, especially if every job had this sort of requirement.10/3: I saw that too. For what it's worth, I think I'm just going to have the letters sent from Interfolio anyway. It seems to me that letters from Interfolio are taken as equivalent to letters directly from the referees; the key criterion is simply that the letter never pass through the applicant's hands. Maybe this is naive, but I doubt it would matter, or even that the committee would know, and I don't feel like hassling my referees yet again.
10/3: For what it's worth, I have been hassling my referees for a great number of jobs (well over 100, maybe approaching 150) over the last three years and, upon broaching the subject with my advisor, was advised that this is a very unhealthy emotional position to take. Advisors and, to a lesser extent, other referees have an interest in our gaining a position in academe and, from a practical point of view, have these letters on file needing only to change dates and addresses print them off and drop them in the box. I have felt the same way and, to a great extent, still do. If the posting says "recent," it means "recent:" six months to a year is a good rule of thumb.
10/4: I believe the discussion was about sending references through Interfolio vs. having the referees send them directly, not the recency of the letters. Anyway, I just spoke to the Assistant at the Dean's office, and she said that letters from Interfolio would be fine.
10/27: I wouldn't dismiss the discussion of how recent the letters should be, 10/4, regardless of what the Assistant told you. Letters are one of the most important factors of the hiring committee's decision making process. They are often a deciding factor in selecting candidates for further review. Unless you know something I don't, I would say the letters *should* be recent.
10/31: Any idea whether or not these select candidates [with pre-arranged interviews at SMT] came from the same group of people who had 15 min interviews the previous day? Or people who didn't arrive in time to put their names on the sign-up sheet?
10/31 (2): It seems odd that they would hold open interviews if they had already narrowed down a list of preferred applicants. Is this common practice?
10/31 (3): They emailed some people before the conference to arrange the Sat. interviews; I'm not sure why they also held the open interviews.
11/11: Received an e-mail request for teaching video and writing sample today. (I was not asked to interview at SMT.)
11/13: So once again SMT is acting as a gatekeeper for qualified applicants? This really makes me question the objectivity (and the objectives) of our "field".
11/14 (1):I made the original 11/11 post, and I was pretty sure that I wrote "I was NOT asked to interview at SMT" (emphasis not in the original). Either I made a typo or someone revised my original post. Needless to say, I received an e-mail for more materials without any SMT-gatekeeping involved.
11/14 (2): To original 11/11 poster: Yes, you did include "not;" the wiki history clearly shows this, so I've restored your original sentiment. To 11/13 poster: While SMT may not represent the entire music theory teaching community, it does represent the the type of individual who would be qualified for a research-intensive job such as this one. Why carry such a sour opinion of SMT over this?
To whomever keeps editing other people's posts: Please stop, you're not helping. I made the second 11/14 post, and you've changed that AND 11/11's post back to being incorrect. I've put them back as they were originally. This wiki only works if people are fair and honest.
11/18: Well said, 11/14 (2). To 11/13: Why wouldn't SMT act as a gatekeeper? It's a society of learned professionals in music theory; who else is better equipped to judge qualified applicants? And why is field in quotation marks? Whatever point you're trying to make by implying that music theory is not a field is lost on me (and probably on others as well).
11/19: The intellectually specious nature of the "field" is not lost on me for one.
11/23: So I wasn't planning on attending SMT at all, but I got an email asking if I'd be there. "Of course!" was my reply, and then I drove to the meeting, skipping my TAing duties. I'd have flown too. I am a grad student and can hardly afford to eat, but I figured that even if I had, say, only a 1 in 20 chance among interviewees, it would be worth investing $300 in a plane ticket. The alternative would be for them to forget about me entirely. It's the cost of staying in the running. You want the job? You jump through the hoops, if for no other reason than because everyone else does. Even if you think the discipline is a sham. The expense and hassle of attending of a conference is smoothed over once you've landed the job. Look, the market is such that if you think you're too good for a job, 100 other eager applicants will step up. We just can't afford to be choosy. PS: The Oregon job would be good by any year's standards. I haven't heard from the committee since the conference, and I don't regret having dropped everything to attend.
11/28: Just spoke with Dean's Assistant and received confirmation that interviews *were* held during SMT. Maybe 11/13 has a point?
12/2: Maybe 11/13 has a point. But I'll be curious to see if those SMT interviews were in place of true on-campus interviews of three or four finalists, or if they replaced, say, the phone interview stage. If the former, I think that's problematic for this search. If the latter, then I think that's probably a wise move - it would seem to be very preferable to meet a candidate in person and ask the obligatory questions ("describe your teaching philosophy" and "what kind of graduate seminar might you be interested in teaching?") rather than to do it over the phone where you know the candidate is staring at the prepared answers s/he has typed out in advance.
12/5: Just curious, but did phone-interview requests go out to candidates who also had given scheduled and/or sign-up interviews at SMT?
12/5: I don't know.
12/6: In at least one case, yes, the phone interviewee has interviewed at SMT.

11/30 Anybody hear from them? The call for materials was clear back in October and it seemed rushed. Just wondering if they have proceeded to the next level. Thanks.11/30[A] It appears that there may be an internal candidate for this position. Are you sure they have not already moved on? Maybe no one in what may be a narrowed field of applicants is posting updates.
12/8: I'm in the narrowed pool and haven't heard anything since I submitted additional materials. [I'm not sure why someone deleted this response when I posted it on 12/2.]
12/15: Also received a request for more materials on 10/27 but have not heard anything since then.
1/11: Candidates invited for interviews last week.
