2008-09 Academic Job Searches in Mathematics (most starting fall 2009)
PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHANGE DATE AND TIME WHEN YOU EDIT
Last Updated: May 06, 2009, 14:30 PM EST
Note the following as you receive info:
Reordered to put offers and position filled slots after campus interviews.
Another math job wiki:
http://notable.math.ucdavis.edu/wiki/Main_PageMORE JOBS:
We would like to bring to your attention
that about 30 new postdoctoral positions are likely tobecome available soon, pending support by the NSF.
The seven NSF funded Mathematical Sciences Institutes invite
applications for these positions.
Persons who have received a PhD from a U.S. institution
in the mathematical and statistical sciences within the last 5 yearsand who do not have employment for the Fall of 2009
are requested to apply online at
www.mathinstitutes.org/institutespostdoc/
Please help us spread the word around quickly as offers may be
made as early as April 10. In particular, would you forward
this e-mail to your faculty and to anyone you know who might
be in a position to take advantage of this opportunity.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
The Directors of
AIM, IAS, IMA, IPAM, MBI, MSRI, SAMSI
FRIENDLY REMINDER ONE: For those with campus interviews, BUY REFUNDABLE TICKETS
FRIENDLY REMINDER TWO: Lie Lie Lie about other offers you have, DO NOT offer up you place to someone else OR YOU WILL NOT BE REIMBURSED.
-Sincerely, An annoyed but gratefully employed graduate student.
Clarification: What are you suggesting: giving another reason for canceling or continuing to travel even if ou've accepted another offer?
Response to clarification: I suspect that the poster of the "friendly reminder" received a job offer, declined to attend some on-campus interview (thinking s/he was doing the right thing), asked for reimbursement (anyway) for some tickets that had been purchased, and was denied. Departments that engage in this practice should be publicly identified, called out, and their reputations in the mathematical community sullied.
GLOBAL QUESTION: How many among us with two-body problems found ourselves declining a position we really wanted to take?
- I declined one dream job and another almost dream job. But I finally ended up at a place that was an even better dream job than my original one!
- Congratulations! I found myself declining two dream jobs and a two-body problem solution, and am now facing the prospect that the second two-body problem solution I thought we had found (at my current institution of employment) might disintegrate in mid-air.
GLOBAL QUESTION: Has anyone gotten a phone or campus interview in a situation where (1) the school was interviewing at the JMM, but (2) you didn't interview with that school at the JMM? (Especially if you were unable to attend the JMM)
- Yes. I did not attend the JMM and I've had phone interviews (and 1 campus interview) with many schools that were there
- Yes, I applied to Millersville before the JMM, did not have an interview there, and have subsequently had a phone interview.
- Yes. This was not this year, but in a past year I went so far as to request an interview with a school interviewing at JMM and did not hear back from them. About a month after the meetings (after I already accepted a postdoc) they called and wanted to set-up a campus interview.
GLOBAL QUESTION: Is there a way to find out which entry has been added/updated latest instead of going through the entire doc and trying to guess? May be it is obvious, but I don't notice any changes after I see a date/time change.
-There is a way, and it is not quite obvious. Go to the "history" tab at the top, next to "edit". You will then see a bunch of dates and two columns of dots. Leave the top left-most radio dot filled in. Then change the right hand dot to one approximating the last time you visited. Then hit the "diff" button at the top of the column. You will then know exactly which recent jobs/offers/interviews you did not get :(
Humble Suggestion: If you recieve an offer and a deadline to respond, it would be nice to tell your fellow job seekers this deadline. Suppose you have an offer from the University of Awesome.
X has an offer from the Cool College. X had an interview at UA and really wants to go to UA. It would greatly benefit X if X knew you would make your decision by a certain date. I don't see how
providing this information can hurt you in any possible way. The point of this page to help each other make decisions and know what is happening in their job search, so why not help each other out?
(I'm not on the market, so this isn't for me; rather it's for all of you.) (I thought the point of this page was to provide a crippling sense of rejection every time a school gets put on the "Campus Interview" or "Offer" list, and you're not It.)

Q: Can someone explain what they mean by short list, and how one knows if they are on it?
A: A short list is a set of the top n (perhaps ~2-6) candidates for a position, from whom interviewees are chosen and/or offers made.
The search committee will often notify you if you reach this stage of consideration, especially if they plan to invite you for a campus interview.
A: In the case of Regis University, it is probably a longer list than that at this point.Phone interview scheduled
