Current Wiki Time: 2010-07-31 14:22
Last Page Update: 2010-07-30 18:59
Post the new jobs here.....let's get this started. Please list the institution, position type, and deadline date (and include a link, if available). When applicable, add additional information such as dates of scheduled interviews, campus visits, etc.
If anyone knows how to move last year's discussion (below) to a separate page, with a link, go ahead and do it.
HOW TO USE THIS WIKI
The purpose of this site is to provide information about upcoming position searches in anthropology. If you have information or questions about a particular search, find the job below by university and edit its section. To edit, click on the Edit page button on the top left of the page. When you are finished editing, scroll to the bottom, enter in the security text, and press Save page. Please put a date with your information. If you have info on a search but can't find a section for that search, create a new post for that search. Please don't post "Has anyone heard anything" as a question because that's the whole point of this wiki.
Watch your use of typographic symbols - as the wiki will interpret them as formatting! If you intend to use italics, bold, strikes, or underlining, you also need to close out the formatting. Review the formatting syntax key to the right of the text editing window. Otherwise you disrupt the formatting for all text that comes after!!

http://careercenter.aaanet.org/jobs/3462819/cultural-anthropology-faculty-positionQ=Anyone know the final word on what happened last year? Is this the exact same search (and what happened to the previous finalists?)
A=This is essentially the same search as last year (funding/timing issues of the search). The previous finalists were sent a very kind letter and, at least this one, will be applying for the position again!
Note that they have an adjunct teaching there now who fits the job description pretty neatly!
I think the description is so broad it fits many of us nicely :)

http://careercenter.aaanet.org/jobs#/detail/3442197I can't tell if there are two positions or just one here. It is listed twice on the AAA website, but it looks like an error, perhaps.
It looks like two jobs: there are different job numbers attached to each job.

here.NOTE: There has been a discussion on Chronicle Jobs forum about wiki academe vandalism.
http://chronicle.com/forums/index.php/topic,44410.0.htmlObservations from 2008-9 search:
-submit your application as early as possible because interviews tend to be scheduled before all are received.
-if you don't get an 'application received' letter, it doesn't mean anything so don't stress.
-if no word, they did not lose/misplace your application!
-never, under any circumstance, contact the search committee for info on status of search.
Good signs:
-requests for additional materials (writing samples, evals, reference letters).
-any personal emails or contact.
-second, third requests for materials...very good sign.
Bad signs:
-no news is, generally, bad news.
-no contact after AAA interviews. It happens.
Please list the institution, position type, and deadline date. Where it becomes available, add additional information such as dates of scheduled interviews, campus visits, etc.
App received notification by post (Dec 28) (x2)
Contacted for interview, one of "ten semi-finalists" (Jan 8) (x2)
Scheduled on campus interviews for Feb/March, 4 finalists (via email, Jan 22)
Anyone hear anything about this position? (Jan 8)
AAA interviews conducted, they said they'd also have a phone interview in late Jan, but no word yet (Feb 7)
Arizona State University, School of Human Evolution and Social Change (Anthropology), 2 TT Asst/Assoc Ecol/Environ Jan 8
1/4 Q. Does anyone know whether the electronic system automatically contacts referees for letters of recommendation, or whether ASU contacts them if you are shortlisted? I'd prefer not to bother my referees with this unless I've been shortlisted. Anyone else heard anything about this?1/5 A. List their contact information in the electronic system, but don't check any of the boxes. If you check one of the boxes it will send an automated letter.
1/12 Email acknowledging receipt of application, will ask select others for more materials the week of 1/25
1/24 Email notification that they have requested letters from referees listed. (x3)
3/1 anybody any news about a short list? (x3)
3/8 invitation for campus interview (x2 - looks like five campus visits but maybe less?)
Anyone know who is on the search committee for this position?
3/18 - three campus interviews/talks scheduled for late March/early April
4/1 - two additional searches scheduled for next week.
? - what does "two additional searches" mean? 2 more interviews scheduled? Or a new search altogether?
I think there are five candidates for two positions.
-contacted for letters of rec (1/26) (x4)
3/2 anybody any news about short list here?
3/15 they just reconvened after spring break and will be making a decision soon
Don't go there unless you have no other options! It is one of the worst departments in academia, and the department chair is not a very decent person.
How is this statement helpful or accurate?
March 11 - Anyone heard anything here?
March 29 - Not a single word
App received (Oct 26)
Request for rec's and writing sample (Nov 4 email) (x2)
jobtalk/interview scheduled (Nov 9 email)
Q: This is for the African anthropology position? Seems like pretty fast turnaround to get rec's, and the job talk section below mentions Afam/Soc, which sounds like a different position.
A: I think it was for the Af-Am position because the search committee for the African position met on Nov. 16th to look at rec letters/writing samples and determine next round candidates.
Comment: And why is that even on here if it is in Sociology?
A: I saw the jobtalk posted. It looks like the Anthro-Africanist search.
Q: Has anyone else not heard anything at all about this (mysterious) position? (12/14)
A: No, and it's frustrating, especially since this is the second year in a row that it has been advertised.
Rejection letter received (12/18 letter mailed to house)
Q: Did it say that the search has been completed?
A: Rejection letter's tone somewhat apologetic about time search committee taking, and stated that the search is now "narrowing." Hope this helps.
A. Called on 1/6. Ze pozition haz been filled.
A: Received differently worded rejection letter on February 2 saying that a short list has been completed.
Has anyone else applied? Have you heard anything? Just curious. A: a friend who applied received a request for writing samples
anyone hear anything on this one?
nothing so far (4/25)

They are contacting candidates re: on-campus interviews this week (02/11)
Contacted by phone to schedule interview (2/12)x3 (Anyone know how many candidates they're bringing to campus?)
Interviews will be completed by the last week of March (2/12)
I think they are bringing 3 but not positive. (2/16)
Completed campus interview (2/23) Me too (3/23) - They're bringing in two this week (week of 3/29) and will decide something next week. May not contact applicants until they have letter from the Dean in hand. Super-nice group of folks - don't think they'll leave us hanging.
So there were 4 candidates total? I agree, they were the nicest people I have ever interviewed with.
Yes, 4 total campus visits - one early on and then three all packed together. Looks like maybe 3 of the 4 of us are active on this wiki :)
I may be the fourth. I have never met a nicer group of people in academia. Why can't all departments be so great? This is evidence that anthropology departments really can be functional and pleasant, so why are most of them so wrought with factions and in-fighting (my current one included)? Whoever gets this position will be a very lucky person.
Don't suppose anyone has heard anything in the past day or two to indicate they'd be getting a formal offer next week or something? The waiting is the hardest part (cue Tom Petty)
Well, I for one haven't heard anything (now 4/13). Imagine that means it's because someone else has...
I haven't heard either - that makes 3 (?) of us. If anyone has heard, please let us know (4/13).
Just rec'd email from chair - they are in negotiations and expect to close the search next week (4/13) x2. Congrats to whomever got the offer - I'm sure you'll be happy there! x1
rejected by mail - said that someone has been hired.
submitted my materials in Nov., got receipt email, but nothing since then. Any word from these folks? (12/14)
last year they had a search for this same position - I was interviewed and I never heard from them again!
has anybody heard anything more from them?

Request for preliminary phone interview (Nov 6)

Snail mail rejection letter dated 22 Feb stating "that the position has been offered to another candidate who has accepted the position." (26 Feb)

C: I have not been contacted as of yet, but I see that
COA has an interview slot at AAA on the 5th.Contacted for non-mandatory, informational AAA interview (Nov. 19) (x4)
hi - has anyone been contacted about this? or know what sort of applicant they're looking for? (dec 14)
phone interview following AAA interview (Dec 14)(x3)
Q: That was fast! Did they contact you by phone or email to set up the interview?
Q: ditto. i missed the AAA deadline - does this mean i shouldn't hold out?
A: by email.
any more news here? (Jan 10) (x2)
I heard from the Search Coordinator that three finalists have been selected. (01/11)
C: I just got a letter from them explaining that due to timing issues they will start with the search again late summer or early fall. interviews in teh fall. were the finalists really selected? did finalists turn them down? or were they never selected? (x3)
A: Finalists were selected and did not turn them down. At least I didn't!
Application received (snail-mail) (Nov 27) X3
Rec'd phone call to set up preliminary telephone interview (Dec 11) (x2)
Scheduling campus visits for January (Dec. 18)
[Q: Have they actually invited (all) people for campus visits already? Does anyone know?]
A: Can't speak for (all) others, but at least one visit is scheduled.
Q: Rec'd email stating that first round of on-campus interviewees have been scheduled, but they would like to keep my candidacy active. Does anyone know that this means? Is this normal? (01/12)(x2)
A: It is not unheard of; I had another school do the same. (Jan. 13)
An offer should be made by next week. (I believe an offer has been made) (Jan 26)
The position is filled.
For what it's worth, I got a very nice rejection letter, noting that while I wasn't one of the campus interview invitees, that my "application was among the strongest received". It's sad, but true, that lessens the blow a bit. Unless, of course, everyone gets this :)
Received the same.
Hah. Since they are all in the same pool, the applications are all among the strongest received (and among the worst!).
Request for letters (4/2)
Asked for letters (1/18)(1/30)
Scheduled visit
Contacted by email to schedule a phone interview (1/15)
Contacted to schedule an on-campus interview (1/27)
If this refers to Florida State College (Jacksonville) position, then contacted for phone interview (2/19)
Is this one for the temporary, visiting position teaching cultural and physical anth? (2/28)
To be technical, the job ad for FSCJ that I saw did not mention that it was temporary or visiting and was not specific about the area of specialization. Others may know more, however. (2/28)
I confirm, the job isn't tenure track; it's contract-based, not really temporary or visiting. They would like someone who could teach both cultural and physical anthropology, specializations not a priority (2/28)
Application received (email) (Dec 1) (x2)
Noted that applicants will be contacted after Dec 20 deadline and interviews will start in late Jan.
Has anyone heard from the search committee? (Jan. 12)
The search committee is making the short list by next week (Jan 28)
Q: Have they requested letters of rec from anyone? Or will they make those requests once short list is created? (29 Jan)
Letters requested (Jan 30) (x2)
Q: Were letters requested via the applicant or the recommenders directly? (Jan 31)
A: Via the applicant.
The selection of finalists should be completed by next week (2/12).
Has anyone heard anything? (2/22)
Scheduling campus visit (2/23)
Q: Were you contacted by phone to schedule interview? Do you know how many they are bringing?
"Position offered to someone else." (4/1)
Q: How did you get that info - by email, mail or phone? I never heard back from them after advancing to next level in late Jan.
As is usually the case, they only send you a personal email if you were yourself a finalist and were waiting for a decision. Otherwise they send out letters by snail mail.
Conducting phone interviews this week (Feb 11)
Anyone else apply for this one? (Yes, x1)
Invited to interview on June 21 (6/10)
Good luck!
Campus Visit Scheduled (12/4)
This is confusing: why schedule the campus visit during the exam week? Are they going to have a teaching demonstration? (see the listing below, under "campus visits")
I know some people received rejection emails. I haven't received anything; anybody else in the same situation?
I applied some time ago and haven't received any notification either (12/7) (x5)
Do you know how many people they will be interviewing?
(12/11) called the Human Resources and they said that they are still in the process of reviewing the applications; they are a bit overwhelmed by the number, they didn't expect that many; the lady I talked to said that no campus interviews have been scheduled, as far as HR knows.
Rec'd letter that search narrowed to final candidates (Dec 4)
Q: Same position? Everything sounds very inconsistent.
Yeah, this seems inconsistent. Can those interviewing this week confirm? Or, anybody on the SC ;) clear this up?
Rejection email (12/22)(x5) "we feel that another candidate has specific work experience that is more closely related to the duties of the position"
Offer made and accepted (1/15)
application received (oct. 26)
refs. requested by email (Nov. 20) (x7)
Q: I heard that some applicants received rejections in November. I havent received rejection or request for more info. Anyone in the same boat?
A: Yes (12/7) (x2)
Q. Anyone know how they made the decision so quickly? (12/16)
A. I don't think that they have made any campus visit invitations yet. They were accepting references up until a few days ago. (12/18)
email rejection (12/21)
Q: Anyone got an invitation for a campus visit? (1/02)
A: I've had neither rejection nor invitation for campus visit (1/3) (x2)
A: Short list was finalized before winter break.
Q: So, should we assume that those people have been contacted and invited out for interviews? (1/6)(x2)
Q: I'm confused, have two people been contacted for interviews, or are two people wondering about this?
Q: OK, so two people have been contacted for interviews, right??? Can someone confirm this?
A: No, two people people have received neither rejections nor invitations. We don't know whether visits have been scheduled or not.
A: For what it's worth, I emailed on 1/18 to ask and they told me they'd contact finalists in the next couple days.
A: They have definitely made a decision on the finalists, but I am not sure if they have been contacted. I would assume so.
I received an email letter today stating that I am not among the final candidates. (2/1)
To see those who were invited to give job talks go to:
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~anthro/events.htmQ: Am I right thinking most of these applicants share the same advisers? Isn't that a bit strange? (3/7)
Application received/demographic survey Nov. 2
AAA interview scheduled (Nov. 18) X6
Q: did anyone ask about their timeline going forward?
A: They didn't give a very specific answer to this at the AAA, but I got an email from them today (Dec 10) saying that they are currently deciding on the finalists, expect to send out invitations between Dec. 20-22, and to start campus visits after Jan 19.
campus interview scheduled (dec 16)
more materials requested post-campus interview (Feb. 21)
App received letter (Dec 9) X2
Was called to schedule phone interview (1/27)
Any news on this search? (4/1)
Mail rejection - said someone was hired - early April.
'application received' email and demographic survey (x4) Oct 21, 28 Nov
instantly generated automatic app. received email with survey Nov. 2
request for letters & writing samples (28 Oct, 10 Nov, 19 Nov, 29 Dec)(x9)
Arghgh.... Why do they make the deadline Dec. 15 and then start the search earlier? I dally at my peril. (x3)
Did anyone else notice that on Hunter's Anthro site they request a "1-page cover letter" for this position? (
http://maxweber.hunter.cuny.edu/anthro/cultline09.html) Postings for this position that I've seen elsewhere haven't specified a required length for the job letter. While it always seems best to adhere to requirements as outlined in the advertisement, a one page cover letter seems exceedingly short. Any thoughts?Oh, crap, I didn't notice that it didn't say that everywhere. I submitted a 1 page letter (hard to do) about a month ago and haven't gotten a request for more materials. I hope it didn't sabotage my application. I'll call them tomorrow.
I was contacted for letters and writing samples and had a 2 page letter, so I don't think that that put anyone out of the running. (x4) Also, it is my understanding that they are reviewing applications on a rolling basis.
It's heartening to know that the writers of 2 page letters who have received requests for more material concur that those who chopped their letters to one page weren't put at a disadvantage. Sigh... It is strange that the Hunter website specifies 1 page.
I applied about two months ago with my regular two-page letter, and was one of the those asked for further materials. If I were to do it again, I'd still go with two pages, one page seems odd.
Q: when were you all contacted for more materials? please include dates, thanks.
A: I was part of the "group of eight" above. I got the materials request about a month after applying. (x2)
The Chair is requesting publications and letters. The previous request I believe was from the Acting Chair at that time (12/27)(x6)
Campus interviews scheduled for the beginning of March (email, Jan 29).
FYI: They rec'd 375 applications for the position according to the search committee chair via email (2/8).
wow - any idea how many people were shortlisted?
A: I don't know for sure. Based on this wiki, there were at least 9 shortlisted so prob. more like 20 total (2/12).
A: That would be the "long short list." The "short list" is who is actually invited for interviews, no?
Q. Does anyone know if this job is still open? On the AAA site, the ad has been taken down. On the JHU anthro site it says deadline is January 2, not Dec 1 as on here? Can someone help? also, does one need the PhD "in hand" at the time of starting the job or at the time of application. The wording in the ad confused me. Thanks.
To schedule interviews at AAAs, they are requesting early submissions of letter CV
-complete application received, Nov. 23
-AAA interviews scheduled (via phone call & email), Nov. 24 (x2)
- Request for extra materials about successful teaching, 11-24
-Does anyone have any news about this position? Timeline? (Selected candidates will be flown out for on-campus interview in mid Feb)
- I was told that they would be meeting to discuss applications on January 21st. I had it in my minds that the meeting would produce a long short list of people to contact yesterday or today for more information. Perhaps they have so proceeded, or, perhaps the timeline changed. [Thanks. So, when you say long short list, you must mean that it's a list for phone interviews still, and not on-campus interviews yet? I ask because I interviewed early at AAA's so it just feels like an awfully long wait!)
R: Yes, I mean like 10-20 people to look more closely at. But, I was just imagining how the search might progress based on what I knew - I didn't realize they conducted interviews at the AAA. That makes me think they will probably want to move even faster. If I had been waiting as long as you have, I'd just send an e-mail to the office contact. She is very sympathetic, and she specifically told me that she is keen on keeping candidates aware of the progress of the search.
Scheduling phone interviews. (1/25) (x2)
Phone interviews ended last Wed. Anyone know if on-campus visits have been arranged yet? I imagine it would be posted, but I'm dying to know! (2/10)
I haven't heard, but am also very curious.
Q: Did those of you who had phone interviews also interview at the AAA? Or was it an either/or deal?
R: I didn't interview at the AAA. I have to say, I thought the questions were difficult. I hadn't thought about them at all. We should make a place on the Wiki to talk about the kinds of questions one should prepare for.
R: I interviewed at AAA, but not by phone. I agree on the questions - we skipped right over the "tell us about your research" softball!
R: Exactly. I would have been able to provide a coherent response to a question about my interests, my research, my approach to teaching, what I would teach there...
R: No, it wasn't either/or. I interviewed at AAA, and I had a phone interview last week. However, the phone interview was with two different members of the dept. (who were not at the AAA). I also know that they called & spoke with at least one of my references last week, but I haven't heard anything since.
-Short-list (for campus-visits) has been decided.
Email rec'd warning of dire odds of getting position (Nov 26)(x3)

R: No, I did not get "app received" either, although I know they got it (signed postal delivery)...
Latin American History wiki says 8 phone interviews scheduled 1/26
It would have been nice to know that they were looking for a historian...
Can you share the website for the LA History wiki that says this? Just curious, I can't find it.

Received phone invite for campus interview (Feb 12); note department chair said he doesn't leave phone messages but will be calling people back until he reaches them. He said 5 people on the shortlist. All happening very quickly. My visit is this coming week.
Conducted Interviews at AAA's (x2)
And conducted phone interviews last week for people who applied after the AAA deadline
They are interviewing a ton of people then! I was one of the AAA people and the SC member I spoke to intimated that she had interviewed at least a dozen people (and maybe as many as 20). Plus the phone interviews. Did anyone think to ask about their timeframe? I did not.

I was an alternate and I was just informed that the position has been filled. Mar. 4 (x4)
How many of us were designated "alternates"???
Any word on this search? (2/15)
Nope. It has the hallmarks of an inside search, though.
Anyone know if they hired anyone?
I received a rejection before Xmas. I was following this via the Media Studies job wiki, and other people got rejections the same time I did.
FYI:Inside candidate was hired

Is this true? Can anyone else confirm scheduled AAA interviews? I thought, because of this that Syracuse had passed me by, but a second request for materials (Nov. 23) without any AAA invitation throws this into doubt. Was someone lying to the wiki?
I also received a request for a AAA interview on 11/20. I have not received a second request for materials. Sometimes search committees work in mysterious ways...

Contacted to schedule a campus visit (Mar 7)
Q: Has anyone looked into the actual app deadline for Chicago? July 12 must be an error since they plan to do campus interviews in the winter.
A: Just called to ask. They may have multiple hires, so applications received by next summer will become part of that pool. They may have campus interviews for the first round of hiring in Winter quarter 2010.
A: Thank you!
A: July 12 is an error. AAA and U Chicago's websites say review begins 15 Dec and closing is 15 March.

Search Committee minutes posted! (Jan 24)
http://web.anthro.ufl.edu/faculty_search_09-10.shtmlRefs, teaching portfolio and pubs requested (1/29)
Am I mistaken or do the minutes suggest they are giving pref. to alumni minority candidates?
You are not mistaken and do not be surprised. Most searches focus heavily on minority candidates.
They may say this, but it is usually to comply with state law. I doubt that they are really focusing on a minority - most institutions go with the best candidate (or at least the lowest common denominator) regardless of ethnicity.
A friend is giving a job talk there this week (2/22)
Two job talks are scheduled so far. If you have't found it yet, they you a public Google calendar and some job talk info is labeled online:

Campus visits being scheduled for late January (12/18)
request for additional materials (email, Jan. 29)
rejection email (2/22): "We received a remarkably high number of strong applications and many terrific candidates failed to reach the semi-final. We required a degree in hand at the time of application and we are searching primarily for someone with a developed research emphasis in the US Southwest and/or Mexico; these considerations have determined or influenced the outcome for many."
Has UNM had campus visits yet? I have not been rejected, but I have heard nothing.
A: yes, see campus visit below.
'Application received' and demographic survey by mail (Dec 16)(x5) (Jan. 11)
Any word on whether or not this search is progressing? I tried to contact the department to confirm the search was on but heard nothing back.
Yes, search is progressing gradually. I have an acquaintance in the know. They have narrowed 150+ apps down to a few dozen, and keep trucking. That is all the info I have. I don't know if they'll do phone interviews or not. I do know that I did not advance. Sad. That is all. (2/17)
Long "short list" compiled and candidates contacted via email to confirm if still interested in position (Feb. 24)
Holy mackerel - this would be a 4-4 load.
Interesting fact. I do wish they were required to note such information in the job ad.
Any news on this search? (4/1)
Yes, are there any developments? (4/2)
Seriously though, about the 4/4, if you're lucky enough to get a job, and those of us who are usually don't have many (if any) choices, a 4/4 doesn't look so bad. I'm doing that now, and while it can really hurt an ambitious research agenda, the scholarship requirements for tenure reflect that.
Short list of 6 contacted for phone interviews, committee hoped to schedule campus visits by end of March (3/14)
received rejection letter stating that someone has been hired (April 21)

Invitation for Campus Interview (15 Jan)
Nicely worded rejection letter mentioned that there were 168 applications before the search was closed. (3/1, letter dated 1/27 but I just picked it up from my school box).
I'm confused by the new job ad - all of sudden they are hiring for a similar position? At a disadvantageous point in the year?
This job was also advertised last year (but the search was canceled).
Search Committee meeting on April 9th.
Does the committee meet on 4/9 or does review begin on 4/9 (or are these the same thing?) 4/9
Yes, the committee is meeting on 4/9, but not sure if the review begins with that or they are meeting
to make decisions about who to shortlist for campus visits, I suppose, at this point of the year.
Is this about the China/South Asia search? Has anyone heard anything about that yet?

Does any one know what the time line for this search is? (4/7)
Received e-mail stating that application is currently being considered. (4/14)
Rejection e-mail received (6/06)
Application received/demo survey Dec.8
I got an email from them stating that my ref letters were missing (they were required at time of submission). This is a bit annoying because my committee members said they sent them on 12/1, but also very thoughtful given how few search committees even send out app received emails. The question is, does it have any other meaning? Would I still have gotten this email if I was not on the very long list? (12/18)
Funny, I also got a message from them saying that my ref letters were missing even though I am quite sure they were sent about two weeks ago. Here's hoping it does have a positive "hidden meaning," but who knows?
OP here - one of my letters WAS missing, so I'm glad they contacted me.
ANY news on Tennessee???
From the Ethnic Studies page at wikia, "Contacted the Dean in Charge of the search. Her response today indicates that they have received "a very large number of applicants." They hope to narrow the pool down to a "primary" and "secondary" group by the end of this week. (1/25)
Heard they received 450+ applications (well more than anticipated) and narrowing the pool has proven difficult (2/2)."
Email received stating 11 finalists chosen and 4 of those hired.
Invited for Feb. campus interview (late Dec.) (update: got another offer, so withdrew from search.)
-Congratulations! I applied late; haven't heard back yet.
-Received gracious rejection letter dated Feb 16 (Feb 22-also added to Bioethics & Medical Humanities wiki)
Application received (15 Oct)(x3)
Request to sign waiver for references (x2)
Have they canceled this? (2/26)
In perhaps the all-time greatest rejection letter, not only was i rejected, but in regards to next year's search, letter stated: "I wish i could encourage you to reapply, but don't want to mislead you." uh, so it appears i've been 'pre-rejected' for next year? they also noted that they are "unable to extend an offer to anyone this year for budgetary reasons."
(x3. they definitely raised the bar for hilarious/absurd rejections)
The rejection almost made me glad I DIDN'T get the position! x2

Scheduling AAA interviews (Nov. 20)(x5)
Q: By phone or email?
A: email
Finalists will be notified week of 12/21; campus visits will be in in February.
Q: How did you learn that?
A: At the screening interview; they screened local candidates after the AAA meetings.
A: They said at AAAs that they hoped to invite short-listed candidates for interviews before Christmas, for visits in late January & February.
Four short-list candidates have been notified that they will be brought in for campus visits in February.
Q: Did they say four? I thought they said three.
Received cordial group rejection email, thanking for application on 1/19. (x3)
They seem to have run a very decent search. I didn't post it at the time, but I was interviewed at the AAA and, when I wasn't selected for a campus visit, they sent me a very friendly rejection. Sucks to be rejected, but nice to be informed respectfully where you stand. Note to search committee members present and future: please try to show this kind of respect to the stressed-out people who are applying for your job.
Request for letters of reference (November 9)
Received rejection email; desired candidate has been selected. (Jan. 3)
Q: Does this look like an inside search to anyone? The ad seems too specific and the adjunct faculty member seems to teach pop culture and gender (although I can't tell the area focus)?
A: Definitely an inside search. I recommend anyone worried about this possibility not to apply. It will help the rest of our chances!

In anticipation of the coming job season, I took down last year's text and saved it to a text file. I surmised that there was no point in leaving the old info up. If anyone could see a reason to keep the old site text available, chime in. Good luck on the hunt!
- You might want to put last year's search up as a separate link. It gives a good general sense of the timeline for job searches.
- I started a new wiki to archive
last year's search.- Thanks for putting up last year's search but the site requires a password. Could you open access? Thanks.
- Whoops! Sorry about that. Try it now.
Someone put in a section for AAA interviews, but in the past, such information went under each job search listing. This made it easy to to track all early stage developments for each job search (check out
last year's search). Should we stick to the old formatting?-YES
Nice job, whoever set up this page. Well-organized, easy to navigate!
Q: This sucks. I'm thinking about becoming a capitalist pig. Who wants to join me?
A: It's still early, friend. Ask me again in a few months... and I might ask if you want fries with that.
Q: Does "dual career" (below) mean both spouses are on the academic career track, or someone who is simultaneously pursuing an academic and a non-academic career (my situation)?
A: I took it to mean the latter, a person who is working both academic and non-academic worlds.
A: I consider it to mean two spouses looking for academic jobs.
Q: (Potentially dumb question) Is there a reason besides "no one has written them yet" why some job postings listed at aaanet.org are not listed here? E.g. the Reed and Hunter College searches?
A: Not a dumb question. I hope that there is no other reason for not listing a position. The point of the wiki is to provide a neutral space where job information can be posted and discussed, to take some of the mystery out of the daunting prospect that is the job search. No one person controls the content of this board, it is a community effort. So, if you find that a position search is not listed here, please add it.
A: I personally posted a couple (job)positions on this wiki about a month ago and was saddened that they were deleted by somebody. (Some of the jobs were later re-posted...)
A: That's pretty lame, I guess one of the drawbacks of an open wiki. Would you be willing to post the questions again?
A: Obviously we have a committed Wiki vandal on our hands; I posted specific information about the Yale job, and it has since been deleted. We should be able to track the URLs of the person doing this and "out" them? I don't have time to engage in "vandal hunting," but perhaps someone else might(?)
A: (from an ABD observer) I think I've figured it out: On 10/28 at 12:09am "I received a request for additional materials in mid-Sept, due by Sept 24. I haven't heard anything since." was deleted. The deleting IP address is 68.228.50.233, a new poster who had posted some updates earlier that evening, including the new listing about Kalamazoo. Perhaps this user made a mistake and accidentally deleted the update?
Q: When job postings request "writing samples" and "sample syllabi" how many of each should be included in the application?
A: This is my first year on the market, but most places seem to specify page count (30) or type of writing "article length."
A: I am doing 30pp as a default. As for syllabi, I try to reflect the job ad and what they seem to want. But 2-3 seems sufficient in most cases.
Q: I am applying for a job in a related social science department. This is an excerpt from the ad"Duties: Teach four classes per semester; participate in departmental reviews, contribute to curriculum development, perform advisement duties; conduct publishable scholarly research, engage in grant writing, and perform other regular departmental and university duties as specified by the department chair." Is is possible to teach this much and accomplish these other goals? Would you apply for a 4-4 position if it also required extensive external grant and publication?
A: If it was in a place I wanted to live, yes. Time for research at 4-4 sounds rough, but not impossible. If it seems like a good fit in other ways, why not apply?
A: I'm teaching on a 4:4 right now and its madness! If you truly think that there is time for grant applications, quality research, and writing on a 4:4 is possible then I also suppose pigs can fly. I have 140 students on average each semester - try sitting down and reading and commenting on all of their 10-page papers (1400 pages in total) then tell me you still have time. One thing you haven't considered is how many preps they'll dump on you - 2 usually but they won't hesitate to throw 3 if need be.
A: I'm also on a 4:4 and it is terrible. I have managed to prep 8 entirely new courses while still applying for multiple grants, doing research, going to conferences, and serving on multiple committees. The problem is that my publication record is suffering as a result of my teaching responsibilities, not to mention the service that places with such a teaching load usually require. I wouldn't do it if you can help it - I'm trying to get out. If I don't publish something soon, I might not be able to!
A: I am on 4/4. Avoid at all costs. If you don't plan to publish, read or think, its probably OK.
Q: When it comes time for scheduling on campus interviews (hoping that time indeed arrives) is it appropriate to ask to schedule flights so that one gets an extra few days on either end? (for general exploring of the area etc?).
A: You can ask, BUT you'd have to pay for your own lodging, which might be a logistical hassle on their end. But if you check out of the hotel that they are putting you up in, and check in elsewhere (or at the same hotel, but paying for it yourself, potentially not at the university discounted rate). However, both campus visits I've had have included both a campus tour and a tour of the town/area. One place even had a realtor take me around to show me various neighborhoods.
R: Thank you, this is very helpful.
A: That's crazy. Why do anything that might make you seem a) like you have so much free time to hang out in their town for a few days or b) someone who makes things difficult? (remember you will be remembered as the one candidate who gave the dept secretary more work!) I recommend you just follow their itinerary.
A: I totally disagree with the person who said its bad to request additional days. Some places are really trying to get a sense of whether candidates are serious, and wanting to spend a couple of extra days to check the place out can be seen as a good indication of your interest.
Q: When departments hold AAA interviews do they generally have a second stage of "on campus" interviews or do they make hires based on the AAA interviews alone?
A: They choose a few of those interviewed (usually 3-5) to bring to campus.
Q: Is it standard that department's have on-campus interviews for 3-year positions?
A: yea, but they are less intense than for tenure-track positions.
Q: What does it mean that they extend a deadline when you already applied? I also wish they would have the courtesy to extend the deadline with a week or two's notice. Makes me feel steamrolled for spending all the money to FedEx it in.
A: Didn't get enough apps? And part two is that we should all try to send things in early enough that they don't need to be FedEx'ed!
A: In an ideal world we would have the time. But it is easy to second guess your statements and materials after each rejection and feel compelled to work on them until the last possible moment.
Q2: I've always wondered if search committees look down on applications that are received by priority mail or fedex... has anyone received concrete advice on this from a faculty member?
A: They don't, cuz dept secretaries, not search committee members, open packages and file them. No need to worry about this kind of thing.
Q: If you applied for a position and see that they are interviewing at AAA but you were not yet contacted, would you pursue a meeting? (AAA career site suggests leaving messages but I feel that this smacks of desperation). Thoughts?
A: They know we're all desperate. Besides, what's the worse that can happen? (they can ignore you some more)...or they can go from thinking 'this person is fine, but not relevant to the search' to 'this person is annoying, good thing we didn't contact him/her'!
A: Ack! God no. We might all be desperate, but not pathetic. Keep your dignity and don't contact people who have already read your material and decided they weren't interested. Don't take it personally just move on to other things.
A: My friend got two AAA interviews precisely by reapplying. Search committees are receiving up to two hundred applications this year. Of course it's a good idea to give them a chance to see your app again!
Q: I check this wiki page at least five times per day. How often is too often? I'm willing to listen to reason provided I can figure out what it is...
A: I'm checking it quite a bit as well. I dunno, it gives the illusion of some control, no?
I put up an "Offer Extended" space, since we had one last year, and it was VERY helpful info for those of us sweating it out. Someone deleted it recently, but I would strongly advocate for keeping it.
- But let's not delete the accumulated information for the searches; that information is useful as well.
How about just keeping offers made and accepted in one category?
-Well, offers made and accepted are different. If three people go to a campus visit and then one person receives an offer, then it would be great to know that immediately, rather than have to be kept in the dark for the three weeks while they are thinking about it. I can see that you've already changed it, but I think the two layers of information are distinct, and both significant at that stage... I'm not going to change it back, but I'm expressing my dissent.
A: I also think they should be separate categories (x2)
I think it would've worked as the same category, and we could've clearly indicated if the offer was made and/or accepted, by any number of people. Dissent noted.
Q: Do others start to feel more uncomfortable sharing info. on the wiki as the searches progress and we are progressively more identifiable? Any thoughts on whether sharing late-stage info. is a put-off for search committees? While there are no self-identified search committee members observing this year (see category below), I remember that there was someone watching last year.
A: I don't. It's not like we're trading in state secrets.
A: Actually, our anthro job wiki is pretty coy and cautious compared to some of the others. Many other disciplines actually name names. Brigham Young - offer made to John Doe (NYU). In poli sci, last year at least, wiki-goers posted their names when they got a campus visit, offer or job... John Doe got three campus visits and two offers - wow! I like their system, but I'm okay with our way too. So, we're already keeping our cards way close to the chest in comparison.
- Last year there was a suggestion that we emulate those other wikis and be more forthright with our information. Everyone agreed that it was a great idea. Two people posted their names and which positions they accepted. It lasted two weeks.
-perhaps the search committee member observing our discussion could weigh in on this issue? It would be helpful to have an insider's perspective.
Q: I generally agree with the practice of not contacting institutions to which you've applied once you've submitted your materials. However, I am interviewing this week and wonder if its would be too gutsy/inappropriate to contact the places higher on my list asking them at what stage tier search is operating. I may get an offer next week and would like to know if I have a viable chance at 2 other places. Thoughts? Advice?
A: I'd vote not to do it until you have the offer. Right now there is no reason to try to leverage them.(x3)
-With offer in hand you'd have actual potential leverage. If you get the offer, ask them for time, and then contact your first choices...
Q: At a campus visit, should you divulge the fact that your partner is also an academic, or will this kind of info get you crossed off a short-list immediately? You know, over dinner, when they're asking about life, interests and hobbies, etc., wouldn't it be disingenuous to avoid talking about a significant other? Any thoughts?
A: Might actually be a positive if they can bring that person in as a visiting or adjunct sort of as a 2 for 1. Depends on the situation. I don't think it can hurt.
A: No, it isn't disingenuous. And yes, it could hurt. Don't divulge information they don't ask for (and they can't ask about your personal life). 2 for 1 doesn't help, if anything it is a burden for them.
Q: Do you have a job talk ready or are you waiting to see if you will need one first?
A: Well, it wouldn't hurt to have something in mind. The only problem with prepping way ahead of time is that every school asks for different things (length, audience, etc.), so you would have to build your presentation around their particular directions anyway. Still, wouldn't hurt to have a kind of template that can be tailored as needed.
Q: What are we thinking is a reasonable starting salary? I know - TT positions vary by kind of school, prestige and funding of the department; candidates vary by many criteria. Still, what are we thinking is reasonable? I've seen some recent advertisements for postdocs in urban centers that offer $40k. That's abysmal. I've gotten $55 and less for visiting positions, which I think are both generous given the economic climate and pay histories of our discipline. Still, to my mind, its not even close to a reasonable salary for a phd in a field where grad training typically runs a decade. What do you all think? What is reasonable to demand?
A: Do you have a job offer? If you've seen a letter you'd know that you don't "demand" salaries. They tell you what the salary is, and maybe you can negotiate 2-5% increase.
A: In this market you take what you can get and be happy you have a job. Very little room for negotiating. You might be able to squeeze out some extra resources (research monies) if lucky.
Q: I don't have an offer, and I agree that those of us who get one will be the lucky ones. Nonetheless, I'm interested in the range of salaries people would accept, and the salaries they think it would be reasonable to demand if they were in a position to do so.
A: It is a hirers' market and the economic times are tough. 40k is probably acceptable for a post-doc position, but it's an insult for a TT position. I was offered a TT job 4 years ago, but they were only offering 42k then, and I turned it down. Of course it depends in part on the cost of living where the uni is located, and your own stage of life and career. Had I been a single person in my early 30s fresh out of grad school, I might have taken the job at 42k (and I suppose in these difficult time I almost certainly would have under those circumstances). I've interviewed for a few other jobs that would have started in the 60-65k range, which I would have been very happy with (unfortunately, didn't get the offers). So I would say 40k is an insult, 60k would be nice, 50k is probably more realistic and acceptable.
A: It depends so much on the school, region, etc... I'd say be flexible - take what you can get. And definitely know that you're being underpaid, whether it's 40k or 60k. We're undervalued...
A: THE CHRONICLE OF HIGHER EDUCATION PUBLISHES FACULTY SALARIES FROM AT MORE THAN 1,400 INSTITUTIONS. THIS INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THEIR WEBSITE. THEY BREAK DOWN THE AVERAGE SALARIES BY RANK. THIS WILL GIVE YOU A PRETTY GOOD IDEA OF HOW THE SALARY THEY'RE OFFERING COMPARES WITH THE AVERAGE AND WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE ANY ROOM TO NEGOTIATE AND HOW MUCH YOU CAN REASONABLY EXPECT TO GET OUT OF THEM.
Keep in mind that the Chronicle salaries are for ALL departments and disciplines within a University, including sciences, medical, business, law, etc. As we all know, there is also a wide range between disciplines. That being said, it is still a good place to start for an idea.
A; The Chronicle #'s can be pretty misleading since they average all departments - some departments pay some profs (business, coaches, sciences) a LOT more than you can reasonably expect as an anthropologist.
A: Exactly. People always mention the Chronicle site when I ask about salaries, but it offers very little to indicate what anthropologists might make at a particular institution.
Q: I have a question about the etiquette of job talk materials. Is it not good form to present material that you also submitted as a writing sample? I heard a committee member complain about this once (that they had already read their job talk) but wondered if it is a rule people generally go by. It seems to me that committee members don't generally read writing samples that carefully. But I'd like to hear other opinions on this.
A: I am working on a job talk (yeah!)and plan to discuss my published research as well as unpublished and future.
A: It's a tricky balance to strike. I would suggest that in your job talk you should give them some idea of what you've already done (which could be a concise summary of the writing sample), but the main part of the talk should be a good, clear presentation of new material (or at least something they wouldn't have seen already), and then finish by giving them a good idea of where you see the research headed in the future, with several strands to show that you have an active research agenda for the future.
Q: I have a suggestion for next year's wiki (which hopefully none of us will be using because we will all have jobs!). I think it would be helpful to have a tally of how many people on the wiki applied for the jobs in the first place. I keep checking the UNM position to see if there has been any progress but it occurs to me that I may be the only one on the wiki that has applied!
A: Not a bad suggestion. For what it is worth, I also applied for UNM.
A: I like this idea. Couldn't we go back and retrospectively add this info for 2009-2010. For what it is worth, I will totally be on this list again next year!
Q: The other piece of information that the wiki seems to be losing track of is a tally of how many people on here are getting shortlisted for the positions. It seems that once a school is listed in the "campus visits scheduled" section the info. pooling ends.
A: I would disagree, because in my mind at least, the campus visit = the short list. We have our list of schools that have invited their short list to come to campus. Then the only next step is the offer, and then an acceptance. We seem to be covering our bases well, in my opinion. Do you mean that you want a list of a "long short-list"? If so, then I think we cover that with our general updates on more materials requested and phone interviews. I wonder if everyone is keeping this updated though. I hope so. Is it true that the Yale position was offered (ages ago), but never accepted? Wacky.
A: Re: Yale. Apparently there is a spousal situation they are trying to work out.
A: but it would be nice to get a sense of how many people on the wiki are getting shortlisted. Also, for more complicated situations (eg. Chicago) where they have already made one campus invite but they then proceeded to "long-list" more people. It would be nice to know if they are inviting more than the standard 3 for campus interviews.
A: Also, it's good to know if someone else on the wiki has been shortlisted. Otherwise, it's a waste of time looking to see if the position has been offered to someone.
A: Re: Yale- the spousal situaion was last year (2008-2009). the person who got the offer went elsewhere, and so yale decided to do the search again this year from scratch.
A: Re: Yale. Uhh, and the same thing happened this year (2010). The offer was made before Xmas. What's with all these married people! ;)
A: No kidding! Who was the offer made to?
A: One of the three campus visitors. I'll get me coat....
A: People need to name names on this wiki. Has anyone seen what goes on on the polisci one?
A: I have seen what goes on at the polisci wiki. And I think most would agree we are better off *not* posting nekkid pictures of candidates.
Anyway, the person who got the offer is a recent Cornell grad currently somewhere with more authentic gothic architecture. The two who didn't get offers were from Harvard (also recent) and LSE (slightly more senior).
A: Perhaps people could mark an "X" under the campus visit heading for each school if they've been invited for an interview there. This would allow everyone to know how many of the shortlist candidates are following the wiki without compromising confidentiality.
A: You want XXX, if three people are on the wiki per a specific school? :)
A: Yes, that was the idea.
Q: What is the new section about active applications below? I don't understand. Also, what happened to the 2 search committee members observing the discussion?
A: Not my edit, but I took it to mean the person is a SC member who haven't finalized their hire yet. Dunno about the other two, but perhaps their positions were filled?
A: Not my edit either, but I'm guessing the SC person was accidentally erased, so I restored him/her. I think the edit was done to collect info from the 70+ people on this page about whether we still have active files.
A: Why would they care if *our* files are active at the many places we've applied? Perhaps the SC member can clarify. It would make more sense for them to be letting us know that they are observing the wiki and that *their* search is ongoing, wouldn't it?
A: Not the OP, but I assume that the OP wasn't the search committee person either. I think it was one of us. Someone wants to know how many of the 70ish folks on this wiki still have active files. Play if you want... I am one of the three listed. I am guessing most folks have some active files. Several schools appear to have made no moves (Utah for one, UNC Ashveille for another)...
A: It was me! If you hate it, take it off or ignore it. I was curious about how many of us were still in the running for something at this stage in the search cycle. I still have 4 active applications (2 in anthro and 2 elsewhere). I was mostly curious about whether most people were done or still hoping, interviewing, etc.
A: Thanks for the clarification! Several of my searches haven't moved. I am feeling resigned at this point, but things can still happen. There was also a recent round of new postings on the AAA site for any of you who've stopped checking!
A: A few still out, a few done, waiting to hear about moving forward with some.
Q: Does anyone else wish that information about an institutional search was just in one spot, rather than having to scroll so much? I suggest we change it so all info about one place in one place, anyone agree?
A: I disagree. All info should be under the college heading from ack received to offer accepted. Then we have our nice little lists as well. The info is accessible in two ways. I only wish that we were on wikia, which would allow us to check "history" and see easily which schools or lists had been updated since we last checked. That is the only minor regret that I have. OP - can you point out a wiki on wikihost that is better from your perspective?
A: I see your points - I just get tired of making it to a school on the first list, seeing nothing there, hoping there isn't anything below, then the next section, hoping again, all the scrolling leads to much nail-biting. Just wanna see it right away, I can of course scroll. And I agree completely - need to be able to check history - basically I only care about five of the schools at this point. . .
Q: WHAT QUESTIONS DO PEOPLE PREPARE TO ADDRESS WHILE PLANNING FOR AN INTERVIEW? WHAT TAKING POINTS DO YOU PREPARE? A year ago someone mentioned to me in passing the 30 second, 3 minute and five minute expanations of one's work that everyone apparently knows to prepare, but I had never heard of that. Any other tips for prep?
A: What's with the caps? The Chronicle of Higher Education forums have myriad useful threads on this topic, including lists of questions people have been asked during their campus and phone/video interviews. Another good strategy on a related note is to set up a practice job talk, invite colleagues (other advanced grad students and some sympathetic faculty), and do a rigorous Q&A.
R: Thanks! I used the caps to make my question stand out. Honestly, the site is getting so long its becoming unwieldy.
Q: Regarding the naming of names, what do you think about people naming themselves after they accepted an offer, and maybe including a bit about where they are coming from (i.e. ABD, a post-doc, a tenure-track job, adjunct, or independent scholar)? I'm curious to see who is getting jobs in this climate!
A: I am happy to do so if I am lucky enough to get something this year (ABD).
Q: Time to Complete Dissertation: I am ABD, finishing up the diss, and I was/am on the job market. I was told that I didn't get called for one particular interview because the committee was concerned by how long I have taken to write my dissertation. I returned from the field a year and three months ago, so if I were to finish this semester, which I could - that would mean 1 1/2 years. As far as I can tell within my own department, that is absolutely normal. I know I can get this info elsewhere, but I thought perhaps that others on the market now happened to be unusually fast at getting their diss done. Any input? (I would find it much more understandable if they simply said, 'we didn't want anyone ABD, b/c there are other candidates that fit and they have diss in hand' - especially in the current mkt. But this seems strange. Any input welcome!
A: I don't have much knowledge to share here except to say that, yes, this does sound strange and I don't think you should worry about it. It took me longer than that to finish my dissertation and after a postdoc and a VAP, I got a TT this year that I'm really happy about. Through all this, I'm not aware of time to diss ever being an issue and, judging from my colleagues who have gotten jobs, most of them also took longer than 1 1/2 years to write-up and defend. Good luck.
A: There must have been some misunderstanding. There is no way that 1.5 years is too long to write! Perhaps it is about your time as in the program in total? How would the committee even know when you got back from the field?
What school was it that you applied to?
A: That is not long at all for my dept. Our average time to degree is fast- 6.7 years. I did fieldwork from 3.5-4th year (20 months), and have been writing years 5 and now 6. If a job magically appears I will submit in the summer, otherwise I will be at the 6.5 or full 7 year mark too.
As I begin to feel that my particular cycle is winding down, and I stop checking the wiki as often, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who posts and updates. I can't imagine how much more painful this would have been without you all. A community of strangers, but a supportive and helpful community nonetheless. Thanks y'all.
-Seconded. I think it also says something nice about anthro (or at the very least, anthro wiki-culture).
- and also, wonderful meeting you all here.
What's the deal with posting no longer being anonymous??? And how do we get rid of that setting? IP addresses are sufficient.
I think I just turned off the mandatory login.
STATS
-ditto. I am out! I have one active application in a nonanthro-dept. and one job offer in negotiations. 27 applications (not all in anthro). 4 long lists, 2 interviews, 1 offer.
-same! 24 applications (most but not all in anthro), 6 long lists (AAA interviews), 1 campus visit, 1 offer, accepted.
- bye folks! good luck! my stats: ABD (fall defense)/adjunct, 40 apps (25 jobs in anthro, etc., and 15 post-docs), 11 long lists (AAA and phone interviews), 7 campus visit invites (1 declined), 4 offers (no fancy R1s or perfectly perfect SLACs, so no need to feel jealous). Didn't get an offer from my first choice interview, but have accepted an offer from my second choice. FYI, not one of my offers was willing to consider a spousal hire:(
- not quite finished: my info: ABD, ~20+ aps (most in anthro, 2 non-anthro), 5 long lists, 4 short lists, still waiting to hear on all but one...
- so, um... to make those w/o offers feel a little less alone: 10 apps, 3 long lists, then nada. one app still active. congrats to those listed above!
- Currently holding a postdoc: 15 apps, 1 AAA interview, 1 phone interview, no offers.
- Currently in visiting position: 12 apps (9 t-t, 2 post-docs, 1 visiting; a few non-anthro), 4 AAA interviews, 4 campus visits (only one from AAA), and finally landed a 2-year post-doc. amen.
- Currently ABD with another year of writing funding: 15 tt, 5 post-doc apps. split between anthro and inter-disciplinary stuff in my region. NO interviews, one long-short list at an amazing place, second string/alternate for very prestigious and competitive postdoc, but I know the three selectees and they are all likely to keep it! I have a few apps that are active yet, but my main thing now is to recoup lost dissertation time spent on the market and get back to writing. I hope to be submitted before the next job round in the fall, but milk my funding a bit beyond that. Good luck everyone!
- Currently ABD: 10 apps (5 t-t (anthro), 5 post-docs): for TT's -> 2 AAA interviews, 3 long lists, 2 alternate-status, 0 campus visits, still waiting for one as alternate. P-D's -> 2 interviews/long lists, one as alternate, still waiting on two.
- ABD: 15 TT apps (10 anth), 2 long lists, 3 apps still active.
- Currently holding post-doc (but soon to end): very selectively applied (only TT position in places I want to live the rest of my life... I'm too old for stepping-stones): 8 apps, 6 anthro, 1 non-academic (NGO), 1 other discipline. 3 long-lists, 3 short-lists (including NGO), 2 campus visits set for April. One app just put in this week (for U in Europe). It was a disappointing year ... I really fit the job descriptions I put in for and my pubs record is much stronger now than in previous years, yet I didn't get any nibbles from the schools I REALLY wanted. Go figure. Planning alternative career.
- ABD (early Feb defense): 21 apps (6 TT anthro, 6 TT non-anthro, 3 VAP, 6 postdocs), 6 long lists, 3 short lists, 2 offers (non-anthro VAP & anthro TT); last year I had 41 applications (14 TT anth, 11 TT/VAP non-anth, 16 fellowships): 4 long lists, 2 short lists, 0 offers.
- ABD (June defense): 22 apps, 1 AAA interview, several requests for more materials, accepted 2 year postdoc
- adjunct: 10
- visiting: 12
- postdoc: 10
- tenure track: 4
- tenured and bored: 1
- outside academia: 2 (with one foot in)
- dual career:
- participant observer: 4 (ABD learning the ropes before diving in)
Is anyone working on setting up the 2010-2011 Wiki (or something like it?) Just curious as a couple of positions have been announced. (posted June 5, 2010)
