Athos Kyme Roark is a fictional officer from late 24th century Starfleet. Currently he serves as Port Admiral, Task Force 38 Commanding Officer and Bravo Fleet Academy Commandant.
In a career most notable for it's lack of exploration, Vice Admiral Athos Roark, like most officers of his generation, came of age during the tumultuous recent past of the United Federation of Planets. Much to the admiral's dismay of never fulfilling that life goal, he otherwise grew up to a very satisfying life and enviable career.
Born 4 October 2331 to Gabriel and Gloria Roark, Athos' early life was one of ease, spending his childhood at the at the family's home on the Terran Atlantic ocean-island of Bermuda. Gabriel, Athos' father, did very well fro himself, beginning life as a crewmen aboard a dilithium hauler. However, through business savvy and a touch of ambition, became part-owner then bought out the other partners. The company soon became one of the largest dilithium mining, refining and shipping companies in the Federation.
Athos attended a military academy on the North American continent in his 14th year. There, he met people from all walks of life and began to immerse himself in other lifestyles although always preferring his own, Terran.
In his second summer at the academy, Gabriel dispatched his 15-year-old son to serve aboard a mining ship in the company. There, Athos met the crew of the Shaky Temper and his surrogate mentor, a grizzled Andorian crew chief. Unlike any other ship in his father's fleet, the Shaky Temper had little tolerance for the young Roark. Athos' father had come up on the exact same ship, with almost the exact same crew. For the first time in his life, Athos had to earn his way. Beyond the protection of phaser banks and shield generators, Athos spent summers under the tutelage of quite a different lifestyle.
After military academy, he spent a year aboard the Shaky Temper as his father wanted. But, breaking with tradition, he left the Temper and joined Starfleet Academy. Despite having a hard time acclimatizing to the new environment, Athos learned, grew, adapted and overcame the challenges.
He graduated and was assigned to the Miranda-class USS Tempest, during which tour, he married his long-time best friend Lisa and left Starfleet.
The break was short though. Athos could not adapt to civilian life, working for his father and quickly returned to uniform, being assigned to the exact same ship. He was promoted to lieutenant junior grade and made assistant chief of security and tactical.
Three years later, he was reassigned to the Constellation-class USS Aries but without his wife. He was promoted to lieutenant and made chief of security during the ship's six-year voyage into unknown space. This was the only time the then-lieutenant had the opportunity to explore.
Upon returning from deep space, and with his marriage on the rocks, Athos was assigned to a series of ground postings which nearly ended his career. Despite a promotion to lieutenant commander, his career appeared bleak.
Until he was assigned to Starfleet Academy as a warfare instructor. There, he excelled at teaching the subject and even went on to take several courses in his downtime. During the two-year post, he managed to rekindle his marriage and score highly on his assessment examinations for a first officer position.
His break came when he was assigned to the new Nebula-class USS Hercules. The two-year tour-of-duty took him all over border territory and through a host of first contact missions and skirmishes. He used the time wisely and sat the examine for a captaincy of his own one day.
An abrupt resignation aboard the Europa-class USS Nobel meant the chance he was waiting for. He was transferred and promoted to captain. His first command, Athos stumbled through mission after mission, learning the ropes. The times were also marked by the many wars the Federation found itself in.
A year into his command, Athos was assigned the Sovereign-class USS Victorious and made a task group leader. Later the next year, he was promoted to commodore and made a division commanding officer, in charge of eight ships. After a harsh battle left the task force crippled, Athos was made task force 38's executive officer under then- Vice-Admiral Phelan Ward.
However, throughout his time captaining he realised the lack of support some new officers had once joining the Fleet. Despite excellent training at Starfleet Academy, some officers were unprepared for the challenges working in Bravo Fleet, Fourth Fleet. Athos research, developed and eventually submitted a plan for the creation of a Bravo Fleet Academy.
In 2379, Bravo Fleet Academy was created at Union Colony under Task Force 38 chain-of-command. Athos was promoted to Rear-Admiral, made commandant of the Academy and transferred his flag to Union Colony. The USS Victorious remains attached to the colony. In 2380, Starbase 911 was created in orbit of Union Colony in the Union System at the commencement of the Tri-Partitie Powers conference at the colony. Roark assumed command of Task Force 38 and became port admiral for the system.
