Interview with McKett

By Mick Nettle

When did you first become involved with the Linkuns?

Yeah well I was y'know hanging out with Jackboot and uh I was playin with this other group by
the name of uh le' me see here. ( Long draw on what one assumes is a cigarette )

Uh yeag that group. Anyway I was gettin tired of that seen and wanted to y'know get into my own
kinda scene so Jackboot seemed like the next step. He was foolin around with some guys and I
think they were a five piece then. Things weren't going so well and you know that five piece had
so much talent that it was pullin' em all over the place so the core trio like broke away and that's
when I got a call from Jackboot sayin that I should like come over and jam.

We ran through a few numbers and Matt dug what I was doin so it was okay from then on.

What are your fondest memories of the Linkuns

The sessions were cool. We had a lot of fun. Doing the recording was fun too. I'd spend hours
mixing the stuff and then it would be 5am and I'd have to y'know go and do something useful and my
mind was all over the place but yeah that was a good time.

Did you read music at that time

No way. I knew chords on a guitar and that was about it. All the bass stuff was just off the
cuff. There are lots of funny notes in there. I suppose you could say wrong notes but the minute
you start getting too analytical you lose the spirit of the thing. I really like the bass
line on Thru. I couldn't play it like that anymore because I'd play it straight. I'd play
it accurately but I wouldn't play it any better. There's a lot of funk in there if you can dig
it.

You played guitar on some tracks?

Yeah but Matt's rhythm playing is amazing. He's the king there. He's got a very distinctive sound
too. Two seconds and you know it's Matt. He had a different take on lead playing from me but
just listen to the Thru solo. It's beautiful man.

Were you serious about the Linkuns

Well serious in not being serious. We just liked what we were doing. We thought it was great.
We weren't any good in taking it anywhere so it didn't really go anywhere but I think you can
still hear the potential there.

Do you still play music

Well yes. I've spent the last sixteen years thinking about little else. I'd like to make
something happen though. Show people what I've got y;know. Rather than just keeping all
the ideas in my head. That's what I'm hoping the website will do - inspire people and make
the world a more interesting place. A Linkun enhanced place.

Will the Linkuns ever get back together?

Well I don't know man. If the money is right then yeah sure.

How nuch ?

Well half a million should do it

Sound like a lot

Well let me put it another way. Sure the Linkuns will play again and sure I will get 500 K. You
dig brother?

You're not really American are you McKett. In fact you're from Downend

Hey man ain't no big seen like that. Anyways I'm from Cleeeeeeeeve Wood. The hood in the wood
The hood-wood wood-hoody-koody-slim-outta-sight-way-down-hood

But it's near Downend isn't it

Well awwwright now you got me.

You really got me?

No not you, me. You really got me

But you never played that song. You covered All Day and all of the Night instead

( McKett stubs out his 37th cigarette of the interview and leaves )
