CSS

In Cisco-world, the acronym "CSS" does not mean cascading style-sheets; instead
it refers to Content Services Switches or "Content Switching Solutions".
(Also the singular "Content Services Switch (CSS)".)

Usage Example

"The CSS product line."

cutting through the jargon

  • "Cisco Content Switching Solutions" == MPLS;
especially for Web Serving\Load Balancing\Data Center Management.
Also equals (?) "Switches for AVVID".

  • Definition of Content Switching from Cisco website:
"Content switching is [...] designed to address the unique requirements of Web [(server-based)] traffic.
Content switching ["]intelligently["] load balances traffic across servers in a data center or point of presence (POP)
based on the availability of the content and the load on the server[s]."
It is not clear how this differs from or overlaps with ACNS; Cisco's "Application and Content Networking System" software,
"which provides integrated caching and content delivery services in a single system. Cisco ACNS Software combines the technologies of demand-pull caching and pre-positioning for accelerated delivery of Web applications, objects, files, and streaming media."[*2]

Responsible Cisco Business Division
  • Application Delivery Business Unit (ADBU), under the "DSS Technology Group" (Data Services Switching and Security Technology Group, sometimes "DSS TG").
