The Muster
Professional soldiers, these mercenaries are essential to most military operations throughout the Known Worlds. Even the Brother Battle rely on their orbital artillery support, and most noble houses have hired them to either assault their rivals or quell rebellions. But soldiery is not the only labor this guild contracts; they specialize in all sorts of trained help: contractors, cooks, cargo handlers, bounty hunters, etc. In fact, it's very dangerous to hire trained labor without contracting this guild
The Muster believe first and foremost in two main things. Preserving the rights of it's members. And in fulfilling contracts. In the first regard they act as a large employment agency of skilled labour, and they do what it takes to preserve their reputation as the top (indeed only hopefully) provider of labour. Aside from ensuring all contracts are fulfilled they also make sure that no-one tries to muscle in on their territory is likely to be muscled right back out. Those who yell too loudly tend to end up on the front lines of Stigmata. Muster tend to believe in equal rights, within reason, they will hire non humans if they are able to pass the entry tests and will deal with to anyone who can meet their prices regardless of race religion or politics, it's because of this that the houses continue to deal with them as none of them can stand the idea of the Muster working for other houses and not them.
The Muster believes devoutly in fulfilling contract regardless. Once the deal has been struck Muster troops are utterly loyal to whoever hired them, as long as wages are paid. All groups consider Muster troops to be worth the price both because of their skill and this dedication. Soon after the fall of the second republic the Muster used to execute traitors, and it has been made known they still will if needed. The one exception to this is that Muster will not fight Muster, and nobles who try to trick them into this tend to be punished for it through having no further contracts signed for a period of time. They also do not hire out to particuliar houses rather to nobles within it, thus allowing them to work for all houses equally.
Joining the guild is simple, have a needed skill and prove you are free. After that you need to pass the tests that have been administered for thousands of years and serve a term as apprentice (sometimes waved if an applicant does well enough on the tests). As to members leaving the guild, once you join it is 10 years of service unless a noble house buys you out, at exorbitant prices. Quite often rather than roughing up local competitors the Muster will simply provide them a chance to join, as it is more economically, if they choose to decline often object lessons are made(a near miss on a family member tends to make a point) rumor has it that the have a few ex members of Temple Avesti to help freelancers see the benefits of joining up.
