The Families of the Hazat

Once the advisor's to the now-extinct Chauki Royal House, the Hazat overthrew their masters - execution by expulsion from an airlock is still known as the "Chauki Stride" - and soon helped to engineer the Fall. Since then, they have been less successful, their efforts to spread their influence usually failing - though it is almost impossible to deprive of them what they already control.

They have always tended to rely on military force to get their way, having originally risen to power with the support of the army. Since then, the role of the armed forces in the Hazat domains has only grown with time, though the role of the Hazat in their army has also increased. Almost all young Hazat go through extensive military training, usually including field experience - in the Emperor Wars, it wasn't unusual for a twelve-year-old Hazat knight to command a force of experienced veterans.

Unsurprisingly, ability and physical courage are of great importance to the house (duels, for example, are fought shieldless and with heavier than standard weapons) - the al-Malik used this trait to their advantage in the Wars, luring at least a dozen Hazat into traps that (to others) seemed obvious.

While jokes about Hazat intelligence are common, the house is remarkably effective on the battlefield, and also in inspiring its soldiers. While they may be even more condescending to non-military serfs than anyone else, the Hazat empathize with their soldiers and do a great deal for them.

Retired veterans are accorded high status in society, freemen often being given money or even land, and serfs their freedom. Despite this, there are rumors of at least one mutiny in the Hazat army since the end of the Emperor Wars - though outsiders have no idea of what could drive this, of all armies, to rebel.
