Australians are good at splatter. Or at least Peter Jackson was until he moved to America and started making absolute rubbish. Come to think of it Body Melt was quite an impressive (if slightly odd) gore fest as well. That had nothing to do with Peter Jackson or this film other than being from Australia. Natch.

This is very much the deliberate B-Movie, even down to the soundtrack. It's sometimes quite annoyingly knowingly b-movie-esque. Thankfully it does find time to be a movie as well as a joke about movies. Still what can you expect from a film about an alien invasion and a zombie outbreak?

The film concentrates on a group of survivors who happen to end up together by spooky coincidence. Mainly through the efforts of the mysterious and quiet weapons/fishing shop owner. He's kind of the superhero action guy of the movie whilst looking nothing like one. Looking more like a dumpy middle aged guy in a fishing outfit. He's capable of the most outrageous stunts and carries a gun that is three shotguns bolted together.

The effects are pretty good, gore being very effective. The action scenes are often fairly clever and amusing. The story's pretty good too. An interesting twist on your typical zombie flick. But you've got a bit of problem in that there's not really anyone to properly root for as they all seem either a bit detatched or obnoxious. Also there's the deliberately cheesy soundtrack music, done very much in 50s b-movie style. It's way too loud and interferes so much with the film that it's often difficult to hear what people are saying. Which is a real shame as that really ruins things a bit. The constant use of filters on the vision tends to irritate as well. Tending to over stylise. Minor niggles though really and can't detract from the core experience (that's a phrase I picked up from games magazines. Well, Edge. Pretty much every review mentions the core experience, whatever it is. Didn't they do Tomb Raider or something? Or is it new theme park?).

It took a while to get into it but ultimately it was quite amusing.

Oh and there was a dead good joke late on in the film which made me laugh lots and lots but I can't quite remember what it was now.
