If someone gave me a penny every time there was a film made about drug abuse then that would be a bit of a strange thing to do. I can't think of any good reason for them to do that but if they want to they can. I mean it doesn't really make me much richer and it doesn't make them much poorer but if it makes them happy, they can feel free.
Anyway, here is a film about just that subject (drug abuse that is, not giving pennies to people. Though I think I'd quite like to see someone make a film about giving pennies to people). It happens to be a rather good one too. It concerns four people who happen to get hooked on drugs but each for their own different reasons. Naturally the drugs ruin their lives but it's how that happens that is the important thing. It's also interesting that it shows that it's not just young people who can end up abusing drugs as an elderly mother finds herself hooked (though in her case you may think it's not exactly her fault).
The story is extremely well written, the performances are spot on and the film is shot in an imaginitive way. It is quite graphic and shocking in places with some strong sexual scenes. There's also a scene involving injecting an infected arm which frankly I just couldn't bring myself to watch. It makes as many comments about the society that produces drug addicts as much as drug addicts themselves and provides many talking points.
It's very pacy and appropriately finishes in around 90 minutes. As such it grips the viewer and demands their full attention for the duration.
I didn't pay much for this film but I would have paid more. Really it is a fantastic film which, if you can stomach it, everyone should see. A superb surprise.
9/10 - £15
