This is going to be fun!
On Atlantic records.
Okay. This is some kind of promo. Presented with just a slip of paper in clear wallet. On a CDR
Okay a jaunty drums with bass guitar intro. Then a bit of vocals with a bit of brass. Then we have a bit of piano coming in.
It's a bit boring but pleasant enough. Reminds me a bit of Phil Collins musically actually. It's not bad stuff but not something I'd normally want to listen to.
It's male vocals but relatively high pitch. Probably a young chap then.
Gosh look they have a video of the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7sjaEHA0dc
Better than the Arctic Monkeys. Not as good as Kaiser Chiefs or Hard Fi or Franz Ferdinand. And I don't particularly like any of those.
Of course I'm contractually obliged to hate them because they're one of these types of bands with their ordinary clothes and boring stage appearance.
Bass drum and twangy guitar intro. Hmm. It's sounding quite similar to the last one in many ways. As much as I do want to hate them they're just too pleasant to despise. They really are the very definition of Rock/Pop.
Lyrically it's all typical relationship stuff which goes in one ear and out the other. This track does open up nicely for the chorus. They build the anticipation of it pretty well. Undoubtedly go down well at an indie disco or whatever.
There's a youtube video for this one as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KWsnSRUAmk
It's more of the same. I'm getting a bit bored of this now. Not this project. Just listening to them.
Snore. I've managed 3 minutes of it.
Fast bass strumming with synth strings and quiet bass drum work. Barely any different from the last 3 only more bland. ZZzzz. It's a good job I was distracted by something or I'd have never made it to the end of that.
Similar to the last 4 tracks. Can't take it anymore. That's enough.
I give this cd two hand claps out of a cheer.
Same presentation as last CD. Realplayer describes them as Electronica. Ooh Good.
Nice throbbing electronics with a constant arpeggio that's a bit synth stringsy. A very thin decending melody keeps playing now and again same formation but different chords.
Very repetetive but that's a good thing. Probably a track that's going to build. It lasts 12 minutes after all. Very good for trancing out. It reminds me a lot of a more ambient version of Decades by Joy Division. With a touch of Neon Lights by Kraftwerk. A lot of the arpeggios drop out at 6m but then build back in again.
It's basically over at 11 1/2 minutes but continues with a few elements left to the end.
Synth pad backing with occasional blibbly synth sound. Hang on, is this Rit-C or VCM or something? It sounds like it. Very similar soundscapes. This could easily be me and Duncan or Me and Andrew. Lasts 11 minutes this one. It's nice background music stuff or sleepy time music.
That's stuff I like. You know if this was by me then I'd probably have some analogue drums coming in at some point. Not entirely sure about the Piano sound they are using occasionally. Forwarding on a bit and some analogue drums come in. Did I write this? This feels weird.
A squelchy synth sequence kicks things off. Undoubtedly from something like and SH-101. It's so much like the sort of thing Rit-C/VCM/ECM did it's uncanny. Maybe there is a market for that nonsense after all.
Synth pads and arpeggios again but with different sound textures. Nothing much I can really say about it that I haven't said about previous tracks. Lasts 13 minutes. It's nice stuff again.
I will listen to this again.
I give this CD a Neeewoonggshhh out of a Blibliblwbow
The artwork is a tad more elaborate as they have a colour logo. Ultimately the same as the last two though.
Ooh there is a blurb stuck on the back though.
It basically says they're ace and their shows are going to sell out.
Drums intro. Punky metal guitars. Eurgh it sounds a lot like the Arctic Monkeys. No. I can't take it. Horrid.
Stop copying the Arctic Monkeys! It's not nice. It's all rather a copy of a new wave mixed with a bit of metal and stuff.
Look they're all the same horrid rubbish so I'm not saying anymore. I am listening to every track as much as I can though.
I give a pidgeon dectives plus green day out of Arctic Monkeys.
More elaborate packaging this time. The sleeve actually has art on it. Impressive. A proper CD and not a CDR either.
So it's pretty much one man and his acoustic guitar then. Well it seems nicely recorded. He sounds a bit miserable though. Probably a bit unhappy about something in the world. Gets a bit bigger later on with more backing vocals and a few background strings and stuff. Quite folky stuff really.
I really like how the tracks have a lot of space in them. Sounds like he's probably using some spring reverb or something actually. The notes he's using in this track remind me a bit of indian music. Still that's the sort of thing pretentious folky types like to do. Copy indian music. A bit of electric guitar in there too now. Maybe I should listen to the lyrics a bit.
"If I had a heaven was my mother's favourite song" x4
"Mumbled something or other there's too much reverb."
"Here we are again, we can still pretend" x2
"Here we are again" x2
Not really doing too well here. Still it's kind of ambient folk and it's not too bad really.
I've just looked him up on Amazon and this CD isn't even out yet! Gosh!
Opens with a nice high pitch piano with lots echo on the notes then gets a bit bigger with nice singing and stuff much in the same style as the previous tracks but it's still remaining quite nice with all the harmonies and so forth. He's still abit miserable. "Saturday when I wake up sad because you're not around." poor lad. He ought to go out and have a bit of fun. That'll cheer him up. Go for a nice walk in the park.
"I want to sit and watch the girls in soho square"
Go on then. I'm not stopping you.
"I fell in love so many times just sitting there."
No. You're just oggling pretty girls that's what you're doing.
Really? I didn't even know I had one. Very wavery vocals on this one. He's sounding a bit like Tori Amos but male. And playing a guitar. "I'm microphone, I'm a tambourine, I'm a record sleeve, I'm your man." hmm. Make up your mind love. "I shall wear the impossible dream in a tattoo on my arm for my friends to see to remind me when my focus turns from love to depression and I pray for George Harrison's reincarnation." Okay I don't know how to wear an impossible dream on your arm but praying for George Harrison's reincarnation probably won't work out the way you think because he'll probably come back as something which can't make music. Silly billy. There's that depression thing showing through as well. Can someone please go and give him a hug? You know sometimes he sounds a bit like Jack White from the White Stripes.
Gosh electric guitar and drums as well in this one. Daring. He says he deserved to get his ass kicked. Probably did really by the sounds of things. "I woke up this morning and it hurt so bad, I just wanted to burn everything I had". Well if you get your ass kicked then it probably would hurt but if you start burning things in your own house without having a fireplace you're going to get into trouble. Especially if you burn down your house. The council and fire service will take a dim view of that.
But not to be confused with Let Love Shine A Light by Katrina and the Waves. He's playing his guitar and being miserable again.
Some more eastern note scales in the start. A narrow bandwidth on the EQ on the vocals. Right now this is getting a bit too samey. The constant misery is a bit annoying too. Mainly because of the woe is me element. Sure the JDB tracks haven't exactly been cheery stuff in the past but they weren't so much woe is me. Okay you can stop now Mr Golden.
There's a blood hole in his roof where the hanger fell apparently. Wonder what happened there. Still the trance music treatment of this track will be bound to get it to no.1. Except of course it's really just like the rest of the tracks.
Some nice high reverb guitar stabs and some lovely sounding drums. Very slow and struggling music with this one. His vocals are about the same though. Reminds occasionally of Do You Love Me? by Nick Cave. But not that much.
Same as tracks 1-8
See track 10
I give this CD a month's worth of Prozac.
We have a colour photocopy sleeve this time depitcing a run down room with a shabby armchair to the left and some vegetation to the right. Upper right is a window. The title is written in yellow with a red shadow.
I'd expect it's probably a rocky type thing. Arctic Monkeys like or something. Let's pop it on and see.
Saying goodbye before we even get going eh? Obviously can't want me to stick around then. Hmm ambienty organ sounds so far. Hmm it would appear to be electronica with a touch of guitars. Hang on this is quite nice so far. Getting a bit more guitarry now and probably say more like Mogwai. A bit of post-rock maybe?
I've just had a quick scan through a few of the tracks and this is really good stuff.
An upbeat track. A bit of a reggae influence for the guitars with a thick sounding female vocal that's a bit country eseque. Some slide steel guitar too which helps the country side but then mixed in with some lovely electronic bleeps.
This CD is far better than I expected but I haven't time to listen to it properly yet I'll come back to this one.
Because for some reason Firefox often won't allow me to edit but it still makes the page go into edit mode so when I try to then open it in Explorer the page is supposedly in edit by another user and hang on where was I?
Anyway I'm continuing here for a little while until I can paste this into the original thing.
Worried About Raye
Goodbye Mr A
Run Rabbit Run
Worst Case Scenario
Trick to Life
A bit Kaiser Monkey Detectives ish. That same sort of swingy drum beat and use of common accents and a bit of keyboards. It's a bit dull and average really and features Honky Tonk Piano. It moves on to a slower track with jangly guitars. It's still quite painfully average stuff. The singer is singing quite high on this stuff. I bet they look really boring. Just checked them on youtube and they. Obviously. Actually the singer looks a bit like that bloke in the chilli peppers. He looks older than I thought. Probably isn't though.
The packaging was a black + white sleeve. A cartoony drawing on the front and the track lsit on the back.
I can't take any more of this though. Look at them if you want: http://youtube.com/watch?v=a2ErypIapyw
A carboard sleeve with a hole in. A bit like an old vinyl thing. It say promo on it and 1965records.com. It's got green printing on it.
Starts off with some distorted drums and guitars. It's already astonishingly bland. Sounds like they are probably using old equipment though for that authentically boring 1960s sound. It often sounds like 'old rock'. Which isn't a good thing, no matter how much they might think it is. You know it's like the stones and hendrix and all that but not as good in any way because they're merely copying. The second track is cleaner sounding with finger picked guitar. It's still not music I like though. Does sound like old music though but this time more like old music hall stuff. Sounds a bit like george formby on the ukelele. Less than 2 minutes of track and I still skipped it. I really don't like the singer's voice. 3rd track got skipped after 30 seconds. Track 4 sounds a bit like the Monkeys. Still doesn't interest me. Track 5 manages to be almost identical to everything gone before and I really can't be arsed with this anymore.
Moved on now to
Duncan's reviewed this too. I'm already familiar with Dragonette through Popjustice.com who first noticed them on myspace I believe. I like her voice. Wasn't really expecting the guitars to come in in the middle of the chorus. It feels nice to hear some synthesisers again after all those horrible guitar obsessed tracks. This would be better without the guitars. Competition sounds nice to start with and again the vocals are nice. A bit dancehall esque rhythm such as Hey Baby by No Doubt. A bit too elaborate in the chorus. Sounding a touch R+B really. Would be better if they kept it small.
I want to like this and it is the case that it's better than most of the stuff I have listened to. I don't think I'd mind it on in the background but it's certainly not something I'd deliberately buy. It should be struck down for not being as good as it should be.
Ambient guitars. Nice. Post Rock mogwai ish so far. In come some drums.Descended into standard rock now. Okay it's officially boring standard rock pop music now. It stays the same throughout. No difference in any of the tracks. They might as well all be the same track. Rubbish. And after such a promising start.
Looking at the cover I'm sure I'm going to hate it. Three guys in normal clothes, one with a beatles cut. I put the cd in and typically it's sounding 60s. I don't like this style so is there any point in continuing. I've taken a random sample of a few tracks and it's unsurprising that they're all the same.
Didn't really know what to expect looking at the cover. Probably something dance most likely. It has big pink writing saying BARE and FOOT with bare above foot. Black background with some white silhouette behind. Not sure what it's mean t to be. It turns out to be Jazz. Yeah. Nice. (etc).
Female vocals and I actually kind of like this lounge jazz kind of thing. Cool. I think I'll add it to my library. I must be getting old if I'm liking Jazz. Hmm it seems possible it's jazz covers of pop songs. Such as Underworld's Born Slippy. There's also Aint No Love, Aint No Use and Horny.
Typewriter style font on otherwise plain white paper for a promo cdr. At first it sounded like it might be a bit like Barefoot as the vocals sounded female and the arrangement was a bit jazz. Now I hear the vocal as male and it's a bit acoustic rock kind of think with a husky voice. It's not bad. Fairly pleasant pinano/strings/drum thing. A bit David Grey/James Blunt esque but not that bad.
However I've just skipped to the second track and for a while I forgot it was a new track. The main difference is that it has a Hammond organ type sample in it.Hmm I'm getting a bit of a feeling that I'm not going to see much variety here. I think I'll stop.
