"It's NOT a remake!" they have been crying at us for months now. "It's just another adaptation." Yeah right. That will be why the chocolate river area looks almost the same then? Still never mind eh? Let's see if it's any good by looking at what people have been claiming about the film.
"Ooh it's much darker this time round!"
Really? Well why did they not bother with the excellent tunnel section that was in the other one? Just not having as many light bulbs on set isn't an improvement.
"Yeah but Willy Wonka is much more creepy in this!"
Well maybe but Gene Wilder was creepy in a more cunning way. Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka appeared nice on the face of things but became more creepy as you got to know him more.
"It's less sentimental than the other one!"
Well I don't think so. There's this whole substory of Willy's relationship with his dad which was pointless and unnecessary. So it doesn't really manage to be any less sentimental.
One good thing about it is that it does get on with things a little faster than the old film which took forever to get into the factory. I'm a bit disappointed that the songs were completely unmemorable this time round and the Oompa Loompas (all played by one person) weren't really as good in my opinion.
It's still a good story and was entertainingly made. I would be inclined to choose to watch the old film over this one though. It fails to leave any great lasting impression after watching. Unlike the effect the old one had.
Should you go to see it? Probably. It's good but you might be better off watching the old one instead.
6/10 - £3.50
