List of Defences

The following list of defences has been compiled mainly by using the DEFENCES command which will show all active defences. Note that some defences, such as Deafness are also condition. Deafness has the added bonus that it means that you don't have to listen to people shouting if you don't want to.

Defences can be the result of skills, herbs, poisons, potions or charms.

Adrenalin

Alertness
At the cost, regularly, of some mana in concentration, alertness allows you to interact with those blended or hidden. You will be moving around with a heightened awareness of your surroundings.
You are very alert to hidden or blended people.

You are now alert to hidden or blended movement.
You are no longer alert.
Autoleap
Though costly in mana, you are able to automatically leap out of pits and earthquake rituals you may come upon.
You are leaping by reflex out of danger.
Autoleap (Chivalry)

You will now leap by reflex out of pits.
You are leaping by reflex out of danger.
Aura of protection

You are surrounded by an aura of protection.
Whirl blades (Chivalry)

You whirl a silver longsword about your head with such speed that the very air about you is rent into the forms of a protective aura and an arrow deflection shield.

Blind
Permanently blinds a target, whether player or CCC. Blindness affects fighting ability greatly.
You are blind and cannot see.



  • You prepare yourself to inflict temporary blindness.
  • You clamp your eyelids shut with great force.
  • You are blind, and cannot see anything.
  • Your eyes begin to water.
  • The world about you blackens as your sight vanishes.


  • You concentrate hard on healing your blinded eyes.
  • You force your eyelids open.
Blur
Blurs your image or the image of a friend so that they are harder to strike. It is only effective against weapon and projectile attack.
Your image is blurred to heighten defence.
Blur (Candescence)

surrounds you in blurring light to heighten your defences.

Cold resistance

You have limited immunity to cold attack.



  • A feeling of warmth courses through your veins.
  • You feel your raging fever subside in front of your very eyes.
  • A bluish penumbra shimmers about you momentarily surrendering a chilling but fleeting frost about your person.

The effects of the cold resistance wears off.
Deaf

You are deaf and are immune to Songs and the Voice.



  • Sounds about you are fading away as your eyes alight upon an ear-shaped rune.
  • The sounds about you become muffled and cease; you have gone deaf.
To your amazement the gentle hum of sound is felt again in your ears.
Diffusion
The veil of protection protects you from the focus of a seeing stone, and from the Locate charm. It also affords protection from the charm of summoning.
Your whereabouts is protected by spiritualism.


A cloak of protection forms itself about you.

Divine light
After taking Kelventari herb, able to WAX and WANE to turn divine light on
You are surrounded by an aura of divine light.

Wane (General)
  • You prepare to wax.
  • You surround yourself in a divine light, revealing a little of the splendour of your inner spirit.
The divine light in which you are bathed extinguishes itself.
Dodging
Dodging enables to dodge out of the way of incoming projectiles, firebolts, lassos, fireballs and arrows. Type DODGE and you will dart this way and that to avoid being hit. Dodging is quite strenuous, though, and saps your health gradually while you do it.

You start to move furtively this way and that.
You are no longer dodging about.
Extra-sensory perception

You have limited extra-sensory perception.



  • Your eyes sparkle and vision intensifies.
  • Suddenly light springs forth in your mind and you are able to see by a sense other than sight.


Fire resistance





  • A chilly sensation passes over you.
  • You lick your lips tenderly and shiver with a sudden chill.
  • Your field of vision is briefly tinged by a flame-red hue.
Your fire protection has waned.
Flex
Flex your muscles before you strike and you will find the damage inflicted by your strike increased slightly - it can make all the difference in a close battle.
Your muscles are tensed to increase your strike power.
Strength (Endurance)

You flex your muscles and inhale deeply.

Ignorance
Ignorance will automatically avoid looking at runes upon the ground so that you will not be affected by them.
You have partial ignorance to runes.

You will now avert your eyes to runes on the ground.
You will no longer avert your eyes to runes.
Immunity

You are immune to most fatal poisons.
Immunity potion

The taste of the potion of immunity lingers on your tongue.
Your potion of immunity has worn off.

Innersight

You have the full gift of innersight.



  • Your eyes sparkle and vision intensifies.
  • Suddenly light springs forth in your mind and you are able to see by a sense other than sight.

Meditation

Your meditation speed has been doubled by potion.
Meditation potion

The potion of mental strength sets your mind racing.

Netdodging
Though costly in concentration (and therefore mana) you can dodge incoming webs and nets of restraint.
You are dodging nets and webs of restraint.
Netdodging (Perception)

You begin to watch carefully for nets and webs.
You cease your watch for nets and webs.
Pentacle

You are surrounded by a protective pentacle.
Pentacle charm

You conjure up a magical pentacle of protection about you.
You step out from your pentacle which vanishes instantly.
Regeneration
Since you are a mighty combatant, you have a certain degree of control over your wounds. Regeneration is the method by which you can restore health even when awake. Type REGENERATE ON to begin regenerating, and REGENERATE OFF to end the process. Regeneration requires a strong will and is thus costly in mana.
You are regenerating lost health through strength of mind.

  • You inhale a deep breath and concentrate on healing your wounds.
  • Your regeneration is complete.

  • You will cease to expend will-power on regenerating lost health.
  • You have not the will-power to regenerate any further.
Resilience
Resilience is a simple but beneficial skill which increases your resistance to magic due to the power of your enduring will. Type RESILIENCE to bring this about.
You are particularly resistant to magical attack.
Resilience (Endurance)

You blink slowly and command resilience.

Resurrection
Will resurrect at point of death. Olvar is instant. Life potion has a 10 second delay.

  • Your death will be prevented by your consumption of olvar.
  • You have quaffed a potion of life-giving.




  • Your eyes shine healthily.


Returning

Weapon attacks will be turned back upon the offender.
Malloran herb

A whirling globe of essence forms itself from the vapours of the herb of malloran.
The aura surrounding you flickers brightly and then fades into nothing.
Running
When you are unmounted it becomes quite difficult to move rapidly about the land, eluding trackers and followers. If you PREPARE TO RUN beforehand you will not lose breath or trip.
You are running without the loss of breath.

Walk (General)
You prepare yourself to run.
You are now walking.
Shield

You are surrounded by a magical arrow shield.
Whirling (Chivalry)

You whirl a silver longsword about your head with such speed that the very air about you is rent into the forms of a protective aura and an arrow deflection shield.
Your shield vanishes as the magic wears off.
Sixth sense

You are using your sixth sense.

You feel beating of the heart of a stag in your breast.

Speed

You will run at great speed when you move.
Speed potion
Walk (General)
The potion affects you immediately and your speed increases.
You are now walking.
Strength

You have consumed the strength enhancing kathkusa herb.



  • You have the power.
  • You feel your muscles tingle invigoratingly.

Walkwater

You have the ability to walk upon the surface of water.
Atigax herb

You feel your lungs expand and contract within your chest.
The effects of the water-breathing herb wear off.
Warding
Increases magical defence
You are protected with Master magical warding.
Talisman rune



Wax
Grants ability to WAX and WANE divine light
You are able to wax light and wane.
Kelventari herb

You feel the colour rushing from your pale cheeks.
Your kelventari has worn off.
