a sharp axe |
Judging by the remains of rotting bark and leaf on its edge, the axe was used by a woodcutter in his trade. It has a wooden handle, worn by regular use, and a sharp metal blade. It is marked with the stamp of The Heru. The weapon is ready to fall apart. |

| A half-hearted search of the ground around the cabin reveals nothing of interest, but within the knee-high confines of the walls your hands encounter something hard, and you brush aside the snow to reveal a weighty tree-cutting axe. |
dig snow |
| You dig in the snow, but find nothing. You do note that is has been searched recently though. |
dig snow (when axe not reset) |
| With some effort you use the heavy axe to hack through the trunk of one of the may firs nearby. Eventually the weakened wood gives way and the tree topples towards the lake. With a violent splintering of ice the tree comes to rest on the surface, its tip reaching almost to the shore of the island. Hurriedly throwing down the axe you scramble over the branches and dash along the impromptu bridge. The added weight causes the complaining ice to give way and just as you jump from the tip of the trunk onto the island the stricken tree sinks without trace into the silent depths of the lake. As you pick yourself up from the ground and brush loose snow off your clothes, the waters immediately begin to freeze over again. |

| The grave itself is unremarkable, but the cross is somewhat strange. It is made of a strange alloy unknown to you which has withstood the weather well. Engraved decoration can still be made out, around the faint words "Et in Arcadia ego?", again in lettering that somewhat resembles that of some foreign race. You cannot help noticing that the snow around the grave looks as if it has been - disturbed. |
examine cross at Grave on island |
| The cross is firmly embedded in the frozen earth, and however hard you try to pull it out it does not budge. Finally exhausted by your fruitless attempts, you sit down on the cross-piece with a sigh of frustration... And the cross begins to sink down into the ground. Scrambling to your feet your flesh starts to crawl as you see the cross continue its silent descent, when suddenly the ground beneath your feet gives way and with a cry of horror you are tipped unceremoniously into the grave itself. |
get cross |
| You stumble out of the labyrinth, and to your surprise and pleasure emerge at the side of an underground lake. |
< any direction > |
| You have escaped from the oppressive labyrinth, a feat worthy of the most diligent adventurer. |
< any direction in labyrinth > |
| With the sound of sliding stone the unusual brick retreats smoothly into the wall at your touch, and there is the click of a catch opening somewhere within the rock of the roof. Thrusting all your weight at the ceiling you feel it give slightly, and then it rises easily, admitting welcome light from above. Clambering up the last of the stairs you lower the hinged slab into its recess, noticing that the opening mechanism is clearly accessible from this side. |
