The Any news from... section has been moved to below the MLA interview list.
The personal stats section was deleted (by someone else).

PLEASE DO NOT DELETE INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN POSTED!!
Leave space after the last entry in a category!
Circulate this link so that it may be more reliable, no?

FYI: many of the academic wikis have been vandalized and deleted. We, fortunately, have not been victims of this so far. Saving the info here periodically might be a good idea in case they decide to do the same to us. There's also a new wiki that we can use if this happens (url is found on the CHE forum discussion).

Post here miscellaneous questions and answers about the job market process, the MLA conference, attire, etc. (i.e. not directly related to a specific job or institution)

Schools That Have Scheduled Campus Interviews

Please post most recent news at BOTTOM of list. It is helpful if you provide a when contacted date as well but it is, of course, optional.

Campus Interview Q & A

Randolph Macon College, 11/11 (interview 11/29-11/30)
University of Indianapolis, 11/8 (interview 12/2-12/3)
Cal State Fullerton, literature (11/26 - 12/5)
Cal State Fullerton, linguistics (starting 12/4; no further info)
U of Cincinnati, 12/7 (January-February)

Babson College (January)
College of St. Benedict/St. John's University, 12/18 (mid Jan.)
York University (Toronto) (from paper to campus visit, no phone or mla interview-early February) Heard it's a fake search. details? Word of mouth: an insider already has the job. But, hey, good luck!
Elmira College (NY)(from paper to campus visit, no phone or mla interview in between)
The Citadel (MLA) What does this mean? Is it a MLA or an on campus? On campus
Pacific Lutheran U 1/30 (visits early February)
U of Minnesota Twin Cities when did they schedule?
Muhlenberg C, 1/2 (late January, early February)
Fairfield U, 12/29 (mid Jan.)
U of Akron, called 1/3, out of the blue, no MLA or phone interview, just a call for campus, is this weird? >> I don't think so. I had one like that and they offered me the job.
U of Michigan, 1/3 (middle-late Jan.)
Southwestern U, 1/3 (late Jan, early Feb)
Augustana 1/4 (January) spanish linguist?
U of San Diego, 1/4 (early Feb) Is this the Mexicanist position? Yes

Rice, 1/7 (mid-late Jan)

Benedictine C, 1/8 and 1/21 (they informed via email)
U of Alabama, 1/8 (late Jan.-mid Feb.)
Kenyon C, 1/8 (mid-late Jan)
UNC Chapel Hill, 1/8 when are the visits scheduled? I can't imagine why this is helpful information to share with others. I would urge wiki-users not to list such information because: a) it doesn't really help anyone-e.g. the important information is when schools invite people (which lets others know that they can probably cross a school off their list) and b) noting when your interview takes place reduces your anonymity (if that's important to you...) Well, like the former listings, there is a range of when they're doing the on campus visits. Usually you know: Feb, late-Jan, etc, etc. I don't believe this risks anything and provides information that can be helpful.
Cal State Long Beach, 1/7 when are the visits scheduled? If I were to answer, it would indicate who I am (nice use of the subjunctive in English though, huh!) ;)

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (contact 1/11, visit mid. February)
Ohio wesleyan: 1/11 (visit end january)
University of Southern California 1/10
University of Puget Sound (1/14, visit Feb) email or phone call? Strange questions to ask: both. Why strange? Stop paranoia already: I figure that emails are sent all at the same time, but phone calls could take at least two days -depending on how busy is who is calling-, in that case I could wait for the call one more day... That's it: no mystery or intrigue! That makes sense; I was just curious as to why you would ask. No paranoia involved.

Do you know if campus visits were scheduled a while ago, or just very recently, e.g. last week or the last couple of days?
I think it was several weeks ago. I didn't get in invite on campus but sent an email because I had another offer and was told (1/28) that I was not among the top candidates that they had invited on campus. I thought the group email sent out to candidates was a bit misleading because it lead me to think that had not invited anyone to campus.

>>It was more than a little bit misleading. They promised they were going to keep us all informed, and they didn't. They didn't have to promise that, but they did, so, of course, if we don't receive any news we will think that nothing has happened yet.
I was invited to campus visit and I canceled it. I remember the last visit on campus was scheduled for the 5th of February so they must be close to make an offer.

Q: Valdosta State University?

Q: University of Texas, Austin?
Canceled their original search. Did not appoint anyone. Opening up the search again. Opening it up to any rank. Just received an email about this. 2/23

Q: College of Charleston?

Q: Miami University, OH?

Q: U. of Rochester?

Q: Millikin?

Q: Loyola College

Q: East Central University (Oklahoma): I heard they were doing telephone interviews. Any more news? (I did a phone interview with them and they're really nice, they said that they'd get back to me in a week or so)
Follow up: I got invited for a campus interview, but they said that they wouldn't reimburse me if I got offered the position and I turned it town. I had another offer on the table, so I didn't go.
Q: Seton Hall U?

Q: Humboldt State University Is this a fake search?
A: I don't think so; I had a telephone interview with them less than a month ago, and within a few days they invited me to campus. I had to turn them down, but it sounded like they wanted to move quickly.
A: Thanks for this. I had a phone interview, too, but no call-back. :(

Q: CSU Dominguez Hills?

St Cloud State (e-mail, 2/5/ no MLA interview)
Northern Colorado U (snail mail, no MLA interview)
Cal State Fullerton linguistics (letter dated 2/1, received 2/11), but we already knew since the offer was listed above. I'm a little surprised I didn't even get a phone interview for this one. It didn't seem like one of the good jobs and there were so many out there. Any thoughts? Just curious. CSUF always gets a LOT of applications b/c it's in the LA area. If you have a partner who wants a job, in or outside of academia, it's a great place. A friend of mine interviewed there a couple of years ago. The faculty is really, really nice, and most get release time from classes. Congrats to the candidates that got these jobs!
University of Colorado, email feb. 11
Barnard (paper-letter; no MLA)
Gustavus Adolphus College (email, post-MLA interview)
University of South Carolina second language acquisition/pedagogy (snail mail, arrived 2/15)
University of Michigan linguistics (snail mail, arrived 2/15). I got the letter too. This is the second year that they have decided NOT to fill the position. I wonder what they are looking for... So they didn't fill it at all? I just figured they gave it to the other candidate. I think there were only two of us. Why didn't they fill it? Any ideas? I'm very surprised.Do you think they're being picky? Maybe there's something else going on. Yep, the letter said that they didn't fill the position. My guess is that they were/are looking for a very traditionally defined quantitative sociolinguist. (all of this is second hand knowlege> problems with administration... but they actually are not looking for anything TRADITIONAL) I have no inside knowledge, but I'm guessing that you're right that there are some issues beyond simply being picky. I hope for the linguists' sake that they're able to hire a linguist next year. They were very nice, and I had an excellent campus visit.

Virginia Tech (Post MLA)letter says position has been filled.

So what does it mean if rejection letters/emails have been sent but I haven't received them but I haven't received an invitation either? Does that mean I am still in the "final" but I'm not their first choice?
A: If they have scheduled campus visits, I would take it to suggest that, yes, you may be farther down the list but not completely out of the running, should one of the invitees not be a fit.
A: Some SC have different ways to approach this issue. Sometimes they choose their 3/6 top candidates, then they send rejection letters/emails to the rest of the pool, take some time to choose the first 3 candidates, and then they send the invitations. Although this is not the usual method, it just happened to me very recently.
A: Without being overtly negative, some search committees will not send one a rejection letter, even if one is completely out of the race, until their candidate (could be their fifth choice) has signed his/her contract letter. Some SC never send rejection letters out.

Schools with Cancelled Searches

Q.) I saw a short article in the CHE about three days ago re the cancellation of UK faculty hires in general. Apparently, there is an article in the student newspaper about this. I don't know if that freeze applies to the search for the Transatlantic position. Does anyone know anything about this? A.) I heard the freeze will only affect staff positions.
A: Actually, they (UK) canceled the search and the reason is related to government cutbacks.
Received official notice announcing canceled search due to State funding cuts, dated March 2nd

UC San Diego, Peninsularist: letter received 1/19, dated 1/11, "lack of funding". This is something like the 3rd or 4th year that they've advertised this position.
Cal State Long Beach (anticipated gov't cuts)
U of Florida
Cal State Polytechnic U Pomona
U of Kentucky (second-hand knowledge)
UT Austin (sociolinguistics) They didn't fill the position and are going to reopen the search with a modified job description. I heard that they have been trying to fill this position for 10 years. - I understand that the Dept. has really nasty politics, and people don't play well together.
Muhlenberg C (T-T search transformed into a VP search)
Middlebury, sociolinguistics 3 yr. position
Ohio State (Lat. American popular cultures)letter received 4/25; not canceled, per se, but will be re-opened later; cryptic, interesting remark about offer being extended but negotiations not going well

Starting Salaries

Please indicate the following:

School size, rank/position, starting salary, teaching load, geographical region, urban/rural, misc comments.
Please specify as well candidate status and job level: ABD, Post-Doc, TT, non-TT, starting Assistant, advanced Assistant, Associate, etc. since these factors influence salary levels too.
Would be interesting to see gender given that everyone says women receive lower innitial offers and are less likely to negotiate!
For example: Research I, starting assistant prof., $54k, 2/3, midwest, small city, negotiated up from $53k

1) Small Liberal Arts College, starting assistant professor, $50K, 3-1-3 (1 is january term) East Coast, Virginia, suburb of large city, female (congratulations!) Thank you! I'm excited!
PEOPLE: Check out the AAUP salary list on the Chronicle of Higher Education. It may help in negotiating the best pay.

2. In the MLA interview, U o Arkansas, Little Rock said it would be $47,000 as an ABD, and $50,000 with the PhD, and they sounded as if this really wasn't negotiable. I didn't get that impression from them.

3) Small Liberal Arts College, Visiting assistant professor, $60K, 3-2 (early april.) Upstate NY, small town, female

4.) Large private university, south, Visiting Assistant Prof., $35K, 3-3; male

5) Mid-sized private college northeast, asst profesor, $65k, 2-2 and language direction responsibilities (1 course reduction); female.

Are you sure? It seemed to me that since these were averages they could be highly misleading. For example, a fourth year assistant professor in the sciences would usually make much much more than a fresh assistant professor in the humanities at the same university. I think these stats are really good for figuring out which schools will offer more than others, but as an indication of what you can expect to bargain for, I'm not sure. But correct me if I'm wrong... My guess is that it might be better to talk to friends who were recently hired at similar institutions.

When I checked the averages on the link at the Chronicle of Higher Education, you could actually check the averages by geographical location, institution size, AND the type of position, so I could search for what the average pay for an assistant professor position in the humanities and even give the zip code of the school location, and it would spit back an average, and then it even had a link to compare the cost of living in different locations in order to compare the salary that way, so like the 44,000 average of one place was actually more than the $53,000 average in a big city when cost of living was figured into the equation.

Can you give us the url?

Here is the webpage of the chronicle of higher ed, on the right side of the page under the heading "salaries" there are links to several cost of living and salary calculators, you can do a more detailed search and even get what a "foreign language" assistant professor at a specific type of institution at a specific zip code statistically makes, and even shows the percentile that make more and less with amounts...: http://chronicle.com/jobs/tools/
The cost of living is huge BUT be careful because these estimates vary WIDELY by resource... by THOUSANDS dollars. www.relocationessentials.com does it by county and seems more realistic. moving.com has one as does www.bestplaces.net/col. The last one seems most unrealistic but checking out several resources should give you an idea.

Also, many states require that institutions (in particular when it's state school) make their salaries public... It takes some doing to find them but they can be accessed.
