For new position announcements, please add the relevant information: School, specialty, due date, and link to job description, if available.
As job search progress indicators become available, add the type of information and date preceded by a hyphen on the next line after the position announcement. The link to a job description can be deleted after the application due date.
After an offer has been accepted, please underline the name of the institution so that we can easily see which positions have already been filled.

Fun Facts
Based on ALL German jobs advertised on the ADFL list:- For the 2005/6 to 2008/9 cycles, 56-59% of all tenure-track jobs (assistant or open rank) that would ever appear on the ADFL list were posted on opening day. In 2009/10, the percentage declined to 53%. On September 16, 2010, count the number of assistant or open-rank German positions and multiply by 2: this will give you a fairly accurate predictor of the total number of tenure-track jobs in German that will be advertised in 2010-11.
- For the 2005/6 to 2009/10 cycles, only 50% of the VAP positions that would eventually be advertised had appeared 6 months (23-26 weeks) after the job list opened.
- The opening-day number of tenure-track jobs this year (8) is down significantly from the last year (23) and from the previous two years (2007: 34; 2006: 38).
- Up to 38 tenure-track hires were made in 2008-2009, down significantly from the last three years (2007-2008: 51; 2006-2007: 64).
- The portion of tenure-track assistant or open-rank positions compared to all first-day jobs dropped in 2008-2009 compared to previous years, from 60-70% to just over 50% of all positions: 23 of 43 (2008-2009), 34 of 54 (2007-2008), 38 of 55 (2006-2007), 32 of 52 (2004-2005), 33 of 50 (2003-2004).
- For the 2006-2007 cycle, 65 U.S. universities made tenure-track hires in German and at least 47 made visiting or non-tenure-track hires.
- For the 2007-2008 cycle, 54 U.S. universities made tenure-track hires in German and at least 44 made visiting or non-tenure-track hires.
- For the 2008-2009 cycle, 30 U.S. universities made tenure-track hires in German and at least 27 made visiting or non-tenure track hires.
- For the 2009-2010 cycle, 21 U.S. universities made tenure-track hires in German and at least 40 made visiting or non-tenure track hires.
- For the last five years, between 62 and 69% of all eventual tenure-track job ads appeared on the first day.
- Around a third of all jobs that eventually appear on the ADFL list appear on the first day. Last year, 54 of 178 total jobs (30%) showed up on the first day. For 2006, it was 55 of 154 (36%), and for 2005, it was 44 of 135 jobs (33%).
- Previously, half of the jobs appeared after five weeks, and 70% by 12 weeks.
- In 2007-2008, the last German tenure-track job ad was posted on February 15, 2008.
- In 2007-2008, the last job ads appeared in late May, and ads have appeared even later in other years.
- According to the 2007-2008 Wiki, only two departments contacted candidates for MLA interviews before November 29, and the latest contact came on December 21.
- These figures are based on last year's wiki and one person's files and not the official MLA reports, so treat with the appropriate degree of skepticism.
Or in other words...
Right click and select "view image" to view at full size. The usual caveats apply: ADFL list only, canceled and failed searches included, only full-time German positions. And so the German job market of 2009-2010 sputters to a close.
