University of Southern Mississippi - AHA interview request (12/18) / Cancelled Campus Interview (2/6) - Anyone know what is going on with this search? Why were campus interviews cancelled? A: I think what the poster meant was that they received an invitation to interview and cancelled it. Presumably, other invitations were accepted. The SC informed me at the AHA that they would be in contact by the end of January, but of course I haven't heard a thing from them(2/27) SC's are like dates - sometimes they never call you back .../ USM chose/contacted 3 candidates in Jan. and scheduled campus interviews for Feb. (2/27) Any word on how the campus interviews went? Did USM make any offers?Had on-campus for 2/14, cancelled due to weather (blizzard in midwest and east). Rescheduled. SC indicated decision would be made before USM spring break. / / Notified by SC that position is filled (impersonal email w/o salutation - bleah)(4/5)At least you received an e-mail, I've heard nothing from THESE people. I guess flying to Atlanta to interview with Andrew Wiest, Curtis Austin and Deanne Nuwer was a waste of time I have to say, this email rejecion may have been the best of the season - no salutation, and then "we regret to inform you that you were not selected for the position." Really? Gee whiz, Search Committee people, I know I didn't get an AHA interview, but I seriously thought I was still in the running. I mean, it's only April. That is unconscionable behavior...Who do they think they are? I am sick of bowing and scraping to these terribly unprofessional people. Maybe they need to be reminded that they are not all-powerful. (4/8) Perhaps, the USM administration would like to hear about how these people are representing their university to the profession. College of Charleston (Europe/Western Civ) - had phone interview 4/30, which was literally set up the day before - about 18 hours notice, and committee said it could be 2 weeks before they knew anything. Since it's now 5/17, I'm assuming this means someone else was hired, and they can't find the time to simply email me a rejection. BTW, did anyone else with an interview find it very awkward and very hard to hear, even for a phone interview? (5/17)
Columbia College, MO: Phone interview (1/10) / Cancelled Campus Visit (2/5) / Campus visit scheduled (2/7) / Offer accepted (2/20)

Murray State (Germany): Applicants contacted to arrange interviews during AHA (12/21); doesn't appear to be a traditional "short list" This job was reposted on the Chronicle on 1/21. Anyone know anything about this?Saw that reposted ad still has 1/12 application deadline, so it doesn't seem as if they're re-opening search. Search failed last year after offering to three (maybe four) people, who all turned it down. They might be waiting to see who gets hired off their list. I was told during my interview at the AHA that they hoped to have finalists chosen by end of January, and campus invitiations issued by early February. mail rejection received 3/5 - I see that MSU has two openings without geographical limits. Did their German search go belly up once again?

Wittenberg Univ (Eurasian visiting): AHA interviews scheduled (12/13) - Campus visit scheduledOffer made What the hell does "Eurasian" history mean? Hmm, boy, that is a toughie. Let me think. East Asian? No, probably not, unless "Eur" is a typo for "East". Maybe it's Europe? That sounds right, but then how to you explain the "asian" bit at the end. Maybe they wanted someone whose interests bridged Europe and Asia, but not necessarily a Russian historian. Just a wild guess. I mean Eurasian really could mean anything. Latin America, Af-Am...good question, though.
don't you think that asking people to post that info will make them feel like they are being asked to identify themselves? Q: Why? There are no actual names being inserted in this list. Please explain your reasoning.
Because when it becomes public knowledge who got which job (departmental websites, announcements in the Medieval Academy Newsletter, etc) you'll know that we were here bragging about getting the job. You see, I got one of the jobs listed below, and I am loathe to tell you which one lest it seem like I'm gloating
I don't think people consider it gloating - it's more like a public service - faced with the alternative of long
silences and suspense, I would rather know where I stand. If we see "offer accepted," we
feel glum but at least begin to reconcile ourselves to reality. Please post!
ok Also, it seems very likely to me that people who hear gossip about jobs being accepted might post that a position has been filled. It should not be assumed that the person who got the job would post it hear. It could be anyone in the know.
Hmmm. This whole conversation seems premised on the notion that bragging is frowned upon in the academy. What about those sentences that we all have our dissertations/books/articles: "My [dissertation, etc.] explores the heretofore unimagined claim that...." Are those being excised?
I think people should post whatever they hear, as long as it is not mere rumor. these schools choose to keep candidates in the dark as long as they like. This is our only means of keep informed. So please post!
Guys, this only works if you specify phone, AHA, or campus interview, and give the date!!
The political scientists even write the names of the candidates. In some ways it's better because you'll find out who it is eventually. Maybe we should do this on this site?
I don't think that is a good idea. Imagine if your chair or colleagues found out you recieved an offer before you could announce it yourself. I suggest we all be patient. If you really care to know who got the job, look on the website next year.
True, that makes sense. Why be so civilized in what is essentially a degrading process. If you were treated honorably by the search committee I would refrain from possibly embarrassing them. Otherwise, you owe them nothing but disdain
Because the civility we owe, and the civility under discussion, is to each other, not to the committee. AMEN You've got that right! (5/4)
And PLEASE do not delete the content from last year! Some of us are interested in knowing what searches took place last year, when the universities got back to their candidates, etc.

Brewton-Parker College (European AND non-Western):
Cal State Dominguez Hills (European history, period open): Q: Anyone know what's going on here? - Reply: The chair informed me (e-mail)that they are still reviewing files and hope to invite candidates to campus by the end of Feb.; snailmail confirmation of complete application, 1/22; Invitation for campus interview received 2/2 campus interviews completed and notification by mid-march according to the dean. mail rejection received (5/15)
Claremont Graduate University (Modern European History/Cultural Studies): anyone know anything? rejection letter (1/29) - on-campus visit scheduled 1/29 / any news?
College of Charleston (Europe/Western Civ) - had phone interview 4/30, which was literally set up the day before - about 18 hours notice, and committee said it could be 2 weeks before they knew anything. Since it's now 5/17, I'm assuming this means someone else was hired, and they can't find the time to simply email me a rejection. BTW, did anyone else with an interview find it very awkward and very hard to hear, even for a phone interview? (5/17)
CUNY Brooklyn (environmental, urban): AHA interview notice via email (12/19)
Dordt College (Western Civilization):

Henderson State University:
Iowa State (European rural history): Offer Made
Johnson State College (European history, period open): Email stating interview will be scheduled in March

Wilkes Univ: Asked for chapters Wilkes will select and notify applicants about phone interviews in mid-JanuaryCampus visit scheduled (2/21), offer made (2/28), offer declined. Rejection received 3/27
Debate on website
Is it appropriate to ask people to post when the position has been filled?don't you think that asking people to post that info will make them feel like they are being asked to identify themselves?
