finding, applying, and interviewing for jobs in higher education12/14 11:53 am EST: I've restored (and updated) this page; can we please discuss this proposed move rather than leaving it to a single individual to make unilateral decisions? I for one am all for maintaining a backup on the scratchpad site, but am not in favor of moving there permanently
I agree that keeping this page is best with something else as the backup. I couldn't get my browser to work on updating the scratchpad one. The sociopath who's been deleting things will drift away eventually.

Re the ongoing discussion now about where to post, OriginalWiki or Scratchpad. Problem with OrigWiki: very vulnerable to sabotage. Problem with Scratchpad: not everyone can update because of image blocking the save button. The obvious if annoying way around this is to post in BOTH places if you can. If you can't, hopefully someone will fill in the details on the Scratchpad. If any of you have a more sensible solution, please post! More generally, I hope we can maintain the spirit of good humor and mutual support that I've seen so far on these pages (by contrast with some others, e.g. 20th-c. Am hist pages). Anonymous aggression on these pages can be contagious. Antidote: more gentle wit, I say!

I'd give at least two business days (Monday thru Friday) before writing any school off.

I'm the guy who wrote the monday morning entry above, and I'm still no interview/rejection. It's so tempting to hold out hope, but I just don't know what it means. The fact that rejections seem to have gone out on two different days suggest some kind of "rolling practice," but I can't imagine rolling interview offers, though.

Email rejection from SC Chair: 12/10
Is it too much to ask that this rejection be signed by a the chair of the search committee rather than "Human Resources"? Does
courtesy not require this minimal gesture?
Very weak and unprofessional.
What, are you collecting autographs or something?
I think the point is that poor communication might point to a flaw in
the department as a whole. Previously on the market about 1/3 of schools never sent rejections.
What does that say? Surely there are many answers to that. And what about schools that
send out mass acknowledgment of application emails with the names of 20+ candidates attached?
But it's not any of those problems; simply a rejection from HR rather than professor so-and-so. Perfectly professional. If that upsets you, none of the SUNY schools are for you.
I agree as writer of above: it's not any of those problems I outlined, so the person
does have to realize that an HR rejection is at least a notice of rejection. Feelings can't be hurt.
But what about what I outlined?
I beg your pardon, but I am the person who objected to the impersonal nature of the rejection from SUNY Buffalo.
My feelings were not hurt, nor was I casting aspersions on the culture of the English Department there.
All that I meant to say is this: In my opinion, it is both unfeeling and unnecessary to announce rejections so impersonally.
The effort that goes into making these applications itself deserves a courteous, human response from the people
who are conducting the search, and it would be easier to be on the job market if minimal courtesies, such
as the one that I am describing, were observed. I do apologize if in expressing my frustration about SUNY Buffalo's rude behavior,
I have made anyone else's feelings harder to bear. Good luck to you all!
[At some schools, Human Resources manages all the job search correspondence. It's a university policy and NOT the choice of the department. You shouldn't assume that the department is cold or impersonal.]
MLA interview request for Assistant level: 12/5 (4)
Q: Would it be possible for those receiving interview requests to specify whether they've applied
at the Associate or Assistant level? Many thanks.
BTW: looks like Buffalo is doing several searches this year, which means that just a couple of administrative staff may be responsible for 300+ application files, correspondence etc. For their sanity, I can see why HR might cover some of this work.
SUNY-Oswego
Deadline: 10-29
Q: Given all the action at Buffalo, can it really be that Oswego is this quiet? Any news?
I don't see how these two searches would be related in any way.
A: See posting at restoration_and_18th_century_british: looks likes they're scheduling MLA interviews as of 12/1.

I am at UGA; YES, this is emphatically a "real" search, and YES, we would like applications asap, and YES, we do plan to interview at MLA (we will be calling a few candidates this week). The search was announced late because our Provost didn't authorize any hires until the end of November and then it had to go through Human Resources etc. We are asking for materials piecemeal because a very scrupulous committee member wanted to follow MLA Guidelines to the letter, and those say that committees ought not to request writing samples and dossiers right away. Word to the wise: please send your writing sample and rec letters along with your cover letter anyway, unless it really is a financial hardship for you to do so (the concern of our scrupulous colleague).
Q: Does this mean that, if we have not yet been rejected but also have not yet received a request for more materials, we should send a writing sample anyway?

UK had an early modern search last year? Did it fail? The last notice on the 07-08 wiki says campus visits were scheduled, but nothing beyond that. Anyone know the story?
A: They failed to hire in 06-07, so the search remains open. A bid went to #1 who went elsewhere, and they were too late w/ their #2 to put another one on the table.
