Any news on why? (I think my colleagues are great in this field are great, so
I am confused!)
still not sure what specalist they were looking for this year and would redefine and search
for it again next year. Personally, I would think all of this raises serious

(2) Surprise unscheduled phone interview conducted (11/25)
(2) Phone interview completed (11/29)
- Suprise interviews? Not very professional.
- Not really. mine was scheduled in advance. I am not sure whether it was due to the
fact that different search committee members interviewed with different candidates.
- The worst part is that some candidates were ambushed while others
had ample time to prepare. Not a level playing field.
- Heard that some schools have used surprise interviews to make sure that they did not
miss some well qualified candidates in their shortlist for scheduled phone interviews.
But such surprise interviews tended to be much shorter than the 30 or 40-minutes interviews.
- Yes, the problem is that some people had scheduled interviews and others had suprise interviews.
- And how will cmte members compare notes?
- If the surprise interviews were indeed used to pre-screen some candidates while others had already been shortlisted,
the former candidates would seem already to have been put in a separate category than the shortlisted ones. If so,
there was no need to compare notes for scheduled interviews.
(3) Campus interview offer, not yet scheduled (12/10)

(4)? I just received rejection letter saying that the search was abandoned.
Any news on why? (I think my colleagues are great in this field are great, so
I am confused!)
This school failed the search a year before apparently for the same position (then called "China historian"instead of "Qing historian"). The rejection letter this year indicated that they were
still not sure what specalist they were looking for this year and would redefine and search
for it again next year. Personally, I would think all of this raises serious
issues about the department's internal politics and I would not apply for this school again
next year even though it had a strong reputation in Chinese/Asian studies in Canada.

Q: By "addl applications," you meant another round of new applications? Or just the Cmte
started to contact those on the (long) short list for availability and consideration.
I would love to be considered, but I learned that the top candidate is still considering
the offer (03/08). A: They seem to be contacting the *long* list for availability.
(4) Offer accepted (03/10).
Wake Forest, Chinese History
(2) AHA interview scheduled (11/15) (3) Campus interview scheduled (4) Offer accepted (mid-Feb)
Has anyone scheduled (or done) interview with any of the Canadian schools recruiting China historians at all? It seems strange that there is no news from any of those schools yet even though U.S. schools
with later deadlines have already finished phone interviews or scheduled AHA conference interviews. Thanks for sharing any info. if you do have.
- Many Canadian schools interviewed at AHA last year. Basically they are on the same schedule as US schools.
